 5/30 I come down from Buda/Dornoch heading for N.Berwick on 5/31. Of course TOC which I have played twice is always an option but I want to hear other Fife options.


 I have decided on trying 36 at Lundin Links, Elie, and Crail. Which two should I choose.

well that would depend what you're looking for. The New and Jubilee are both pretty darn good tests, and relatively easy to access and affordable. Crail and Elie both more quirky and ooze history. Kingsbarns is obviously newer, it's more spectacular, and also more expensive. A little off the tourist path, you could try Levin or Lundin. Another Fife option, which never seems to come up for some reason, is the Craighead course at Crail. It was Gil Hanse's first golf course.

I'd echo Elie, Crail and Lundin Links.  Mark could tell you all about Elie as he is a member there.  BUDA was there some years ago and there are lots of threads about it around here.

Scotscraig is a wee charmer. Go see some MacKenzie at Pitreavie? Ladybank as close to a London heathland as you’ll find in Fife. Nine GREAT OTM holes at St Michael’s (and SO well-named!)

I don’t know about that Mark. A chance to watch Deal Town play after a round at RCP was special.

I switched browsers and am still trying to restore familiar habits/functions.  Back in 2007-8 was my first trip to experience Scottish and links golf.  I played all over Scotland and met up with some friends for the final leg in Fife and East Lothian.  We played TOC, New, Crail, Craighead, Elie, and ended our jaunt on the other side of the Firth at Gullane, West Links, and were scheduled to play the East Links the afternoon after our morning round on the West.  Over lunch we realized the West Links was so much fun, we decided to just play it again that afternoon.  Although I haven't read much of the above about your objectives, I'm still happy we did what we did.  We literally walked off the course and wanted to go right back and play it again.  In my view, that's a good course.

Largely agree, Mark, but St Andrews on a dreich January day with a wind howling in from the East is no place for women, children, golfers - or even ducks!

If you like it quirky, I would consider the Castle Course too...


I played Craighead at The Crail Golfing Society several times, but never really liked it. I guess not Gil Hanse's best work.


If weather conditions are bad, or when you're fed up with links or cliff-top golf, Ladybank is a great alternative. Another inland course close to St. Andrews is The Duke's. Underestimated in my view and a joy to play.

When you say "leaving early," which day (and at what time of day) are you thinking of leaving Golspie and heading south to St. Andrews?

I am not quite sure what you are asking or want to know. I have never actually made the drive from Golspie to St. Andrews, but my guess is it will take you a minimum of 3 hours. If you get caught for a while behind a farmer driving a tractor at 20mph on a 2-lane road (and that does happen), it could take you longer.
