Sarazen on Mussolini
« on: March 15, 2022, 05:58:17 AM »

Gene Sarazen on golf in Italy and Mussolini, from September 1929. Makes uncomfortable reading to today's eyes, but we must remember that, before the rise of Hitler, Mussolini had a fair bit of support in the West.

Sadly, fascist dictatorships still get a lot of moral and financial support in the west, particularly from apologist, propaganda "news" outlets and foreign-sponsored social media aimed at fostering American divisiveness.

By 1929 Mussolini's true colors had emerged and all vestiges of democracy removed.

He did create the Vatican State in 1929. Must of made a ton of Italian Americans happy. You know how us Papists can be easily distracted.

In all fairness Sarazen did not write the article. It’s just another interview transcribed for profit.

An Italian American makes a pilgrimage to Rome six years before making a deuce on 15. It’s a non story.

That he thought Augusta National in those early years not a good golf course at all would be a very good story, but the experts seem to dismiss the sentiment as the faulty memory of an old crank.
Maybe as with Joe Pesci's character in Goodfellas, they're prejudiced against Italians.

Surely the biggest point made in that article is how bad he thought the weather was in the UK. I wonder what he'd have made of the Players Championship !  ;D
