James:

In all honesty, I think Harbour Town is a much better course.  From variety of holes, to strategy, to memorability - right down the line, HT scores better than LC.  Frankly, perhaps I expected too much from LC, but having been to see many more Dye courses since that date, my initial impression seems to have held - that LC is a tad over-rated.

Paul,

Fair enough..Have you been to Old Marsh?  If so, what do you think in comparison with the other two?

James,
I've been to Old Marsh. After I visit Long Cove next week, I'll give you my impressions. From what I know of LC, I'm not sure if it's a notch lower than most of Pete's stuff, just different than his typical "push the envelope and cut your tongue sealing it" type of design.

Anthony,

I'll look forward to your comments..

I was lucky enough to play Sawgrass, Long Cove & Old Marsh and Harbour Town as part of the same trip, so my personal opinions will remain relatively private although the order above, has a clue.

Okay,
Just got back in from Long Cove and I hope to have some pics up in the near future. There are currently going through the transition from bermuda to rye/poa triv so, some of the pics look a little disappointing. Anyways, LCC has TifEagle on their greens, 419 roughs and tees are a mix of zoysia and bermuda, depending on the shade areas. The golf course is very simple itself, just a sign with the hole number and a ball washer-each tee has a yardage plate on it. I thought that the condition of the course was great and the course flowed from hole to hole very well. Some holes that stick out to me are #3-great, long, dogleg par 5, #5-fun, simply put, #6-8, #12-15 also. I think that Long Cove doesn't get enough credit for being in the league that they are. I didn't get a chance to see Harbor Town, but I will soon. The members are very proud of their gem and rightfull so. Pete Dye does have some burried elephants in some of the greens, but Pete has always been on to raise a few eyebrows!! Great Course!!

Did a photo tour of Long Cove ever materialise?...

The other thread "which modern architect designs the best greens" has piqued my interest and I want to see photos of some of the greens at Long Cove...

Thanks,
Ally

thannks Tony.  did i miss 16?  i was in that long fairway bunker on the right with my tee ball.  then played by 3rd from the right green side bunker.  that was a fun green too slanted back to front with a couple waves.

i like LC more than i like HT.  the greens are much more interesting and one isn't as confined off the tees.  i'd play LC 7/10 vs HT.

#16 have along waste area/bunker down the right side, about 250yds down. Then there are 2 pot bunkers up to the right of green. There is a large greenside bunker with a tree in the middle of it on the left. Great, simple golf hole.

Tony,
Green on #16 is outstanding, however, body of the hole is bland.  Might be the weakest hole design wise of the 18.  Still a good hole but wouldn't call it great especially for a finishing hole.

Mark,
I would agree with you in the fact that it's the weakest hole on the course. I always wished LC finished in typical, 5-3-4 Pete Dye fashion. #16 does fit the land and may be better than #4, but it is simple.
If you consider (and I) consider #16 to be the weakest hole, LC is a pretty good track!

Tony,
We are in agreement although I am not hung up on the 5-3-4 finish that Pete often employs.  The potential is there for #16 to be a much more interesting finishing hole but regardless, Love Cove is special.  I love the place.

Here is another extensive photo tour of Long Cove:

http://www.golfarchitecturepictures.com/Web%20Galleries/USA/S%20Carolina/Long%20Cove/index.html

Whoa...that photo album was put together by Chris Hunt and the photos were taken during his tour in 2001. LC was renovating at the time he was awarded some sort of scholarship, allowing him to view many of the great courses in America. Chris and I interned at Friars Head together and he went in to do work for several architect. There is actually some photos of me from Creek Club and Quague Field Club on that site. I must have been 19 or so.
Really cool to look at many of the courses and how much they have changed in 13 years. Look at the pics of The Bridge. Bunkers look NOTHING like that now. Great photo album website, Michael!

Anyone have any early photos of Long Cove Club and/or an aerial around the time it opened in 1981?  I am just starting a search process.
Thanks,
Mark
