Interview with Andrew Green

The fellow tasked with returning Oak Hill East to ... well, Oak Hill East, was kind enough to sit for an interview with us. Here goes nothing...

I had been seeing posts that Oak Hill East was going to be a full-on restoration ... which I didn't think was possible given the space constraints around the old 6th hole.

In your interview Andrew clarifies that the project will be a "sympathetic restoration" with a hole much like the old 6th behind today's 4th, while others "will be framed in a Ross style to fit the modern game".  It looks as if his definition of restoration is yet another interpretation of the term.

In Chris Buie's Ross book, he shows the original plans and describes the idea of having multiple playing routes for the 36 holes of the West and East courses. That is fascinating to me, and would be a wonderful thing to see. Oak Hill is such a unique property: a midsized, northeast city with no other professional sports at the top level, with a club that has the space, the support and the facilities to host major events. It will be nice to see this project come to fruition.

And you are correct, Tom. Flexibility in definition of terms might make Webster of the dictionary tribe twitch a bit in his/her grave.

The East course will definitely be better for the work -- the work done back in the 70's is some of the worst ever, in terms of not fitting in with the rest of the course.

They also badly need to cull a percentage of their beautiful oak trees.  I hope Andrew is good at club politics!

Ronald - what do you mean by "multiple playing routes" ?  Jumping from one course to the other and back to make up a different 18 ?  I agree there are lots of opportunities, except that club is so busy in season I think you'd find some fellow members to object.

Yessir, that's exactly it. Interconnected routes across all 36 holes. Chris goes into detail in the book

and it is a great read. Chock full of excellent information. Certainly with Brad Klein's book

next to it on a personal golf shelf, one is prepped for Donald J. Ross, Jr. trivia night.

I have heard that Andrew Green has asked the club for permission to remove 2,000 trees and last I heard they were "thinking it over. "Not sure that would be enough, to be honest.
Also, the "new" 15th hole will not be anything like the original Ross hole; they are going to fill-in the pond right of the green and the hole will be very similar to the third@ Wannamoisett, around 140 yards or so with a small green and deep bunkers in front. The green site and tee will be where they are now, give or take. The original 15th green was left of the current green, on top of the hill as you look from the tee.
Also, the 18th hole will not be going back to the original, unfortunately. The original green (about 25-30 yards behind where the green is now) was one of the great greens on the course but was sadly destroyed because of the need for bleachers for four days every 10-12 years.
Nice to hear Andrew Green say nice things about the west course, a course that I personally love but seems to get very little respect on this site.

JP:  Thanks for the additional detail.  I had wondered about the 18th green.

Is the comparison of the revised #15 to Wannamoisett your own, or was that how it was presented to the members?

Tom-
I believe that is how it was presented to the members given that when I was there last fall and the head professional was showing me what the plan was for #15 my immediate thought was that it looked just like #3 @ Wannamoisett. When I mentioned that to him he basically said "Yes, that's the plan."
