Right now we are up to a whopping 40 attendees. By my count that includes 20 folks from outside Minnesota, and 20 from Minnesota (depending on how you account for Hodgdon ;) ).

Why not set the format as "Minnesota vs the Rest of the World?"

It's trending that way!

Well, the dates of this event conflict with the Civic Holiday weekend here in Canada and also my club championship...but really, who am I kidding.

Too many great friends in this field, many great names I haven't had the pleasure of meeting, a seemingly awesome venue and a state I've always wanted to visit.

Please add me to the waiting list...representing Canada (Ontario).

Because I am itinerant and impatient...

Friday, August 3rd, I have the following tee-times booked:

7:30AM at The Wilderness (at Fortune Bay)

2PM at The Quarry at Giants Ridge

Tee-times in my name. I can always get more if there's any interest. Let me know if you're interested in one or both of those.

One other item for guys who might be staying in Minneapolis on Friday night: The Twins host Kansas City on Friday night at 7 pm.

Target Field probably gets a pretty good Doak score for stadiums. It's quite nice and worth seeing if you are into that kind of thing.

A solid Doak 7.  ;D

Although I would give CHS Field in St. Paul an 8!

Pat Craig appears to have become one of those St. Paul residents who just has to rip Minneapolis.

I didn't rip Target Field...I gave it a 7!  ;) :)

Homer or not, CHS Field is a terrific ballpark and has won a number of awards for its design since opening in 2015:

Please add me to the waitlist. My in-laws live in Duluth, and I usually avoid trips there in the summer on the grounds that "I don't like to be that far away from my course." Heading up for a weekend of golf may not prove popular, but this seems an event not to be missed.

I was lucky enough to play some Over-35 baseball at CHS Field. It is a great ballpark in a really cool spot. All of the old, brick buildings surrounding it along with a view of downtown St Paul, make it a cool spot to see a game.
As a baseball junkie, Target Field may be my favorite MLB stadium that I've seen.

Both great options for guys visiting town for the weekend!

St. Paulites diss Minneapolis.

Minneapolitans ignore St. Paul.

So it has always been. So it will ever be.

I don't know that I fully believe that. I think people on in Minneapolis and the western suburbs (myself included) are happy to go to St. Paul and happily do so. I personally like Minneapolis more than St. Paul, but have no ill-will toward the 651. What I don't get is people in St. Paul who basically refuse to go to Minneapolis or who rip it.

I don't see the disdain going both ways.

I don’t think you would have any trouble finding West Siders who never, ever go to St. Paul or give it a second thought, because who needs St. Paul when we have Minneapolis — or so those people seem to think.

That is the source of the disdain.

It is like Rick (Bogart) and Ugarte (Peter Lorre) in “Casablanca.”

Ugarte: “You despise me, don’t you.”

Rick: “Well, if I gave you any thought, I probably would.”

Sorry to have touched upon the ancient "rivalry" between St. Paul & Minneapolis...  :o  ;D

To those coming to the Mashie from out of town, this rivalry is even part of the Minnesota Twins culture, which "Minnie" and "Paul" shaking hands after home runs in the outfield of Target Field:

Good news! Due to Northland's terrific generosity and as a response to high interest in the event, we are expanding the number of confirmed attendees from 40 to 50. I have updated the attendee list in the first post of this thread.

As I know Duluth is not the easiest place to get to, hopefully this helps those previously on the wait list get started with travel arrangements.

In addition, there was some interest in Friday afternoon golf before the event. If people who are traveling from out of town are interested, you can call Northland's Head Professional (John Kuenzli) directly at (218) 525-1970 after July 1st to set up a tee time for that afternoon sometime after roughly 1:00 pm.

It's a cold morning here in Minnesota, but it is exciting to be thinking about golf in August already!

Pat mentioned in the first post that accommodations can get filled-up in the summer.  I have found that to be true myself.  Here are a few suggestions.

The Voyageur Lakewalk Inn is an old-school family run motel that doesn't pop-up on all of the hotel search sites.  It's nothing fancy, but the location is great.  It's 3 miles from Northland on the same street (Superior).  And it's a block  from the historic Fitger's Brewery complex which now holds an inn, bars, restaurants, liquor store etc.  Always nice to be able to walk to get a drink.  8)

If you belong to a club of some sort, the Kitchi Gammi Club might be a good option.
http://kitchigammiclub.com/

Of the above, I have only stayed at the Voyageur and that's where I will reside for this trip.

Regarding car travel to Duluth, it could very likely take a half hour or so longer than what your phone is telling you now.  Duluth and the surrounding communities is vacation land for many folks.  Expect that the Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening commutes will take longer.  Saturday morning might not be too slow.

Thanks for the heads up about the hotel, just booked a room.

Can't wait to play Northland and I think my wife is more excited then I am as I mention how much I want to play it, every year we head up North for vacation.

Thanks for expanding on the lodging front, Morgan. I am far from a Duluth expert so the above is very helpful.

I did look into the Kitchi Gammi Club, which has a whopping 4 rooms that are all currently on hold for a wedding.

Like you, I reserved a room at the Lakewalk Inn. It appears to be rustic, but in a good location. Given that I don't anticipate spending more than about six hours actually in the room  :)  I figured it was a decent enough option. I know of a couple other folks that booked rooms there as well. Perhaps the Mashie can "take over" the Lakewalk Inn much the same way we did the Green Lake Inn at the 2011 Mashie!

Perhaps the organizer will try not to lock himself in his room??

Thank you Mark!  I'm glad someone else said it.  Although jumping out windows to make a tee time is admirable.
