The “Fort”. Fort Myers CC

I have recently heard some interesting opinions on the muni in Fort Myers. They call it the “Fort”.   Never been or seen it so I’m calling on any who have for some input.  Know some guys who play there regularly !

I lived right down the street from The Fort in 2011-2013. It's attributed to Ross (1917) and reminds me most of Rackham another Ross municipal outside Detroit. Steve Smyers did a much needed renovation in 2014 and I have not played since but the greens had shrunken dramatically and the bunkers often had little to no sand before renovation.

It is on very flat land with the main architectural feature being a canal that cuts through the property East to West. It is used very effectively as a diagonal hazard on 3, 8, and 18. The greens roll true and the turf is decent and well draining being built on sand. It is very walkable and many players do walk with most using push carts.

The course is very busy during from December through the end of March and you would need to make a tee time if going with a group. It also has a very dramatic and old clubhouse containing a rather ordinary restaurant with a very busy patio/porch directly behind the 18th green. Heckling can occur if you're finishing during Happy Hour. Overall a serviceable and fun round if you're in Fort Myers and will certainly be the cheapest option in season.

Host of the Becks Open?

It's now sponsored by Yuengling but it's the same event.
Looks like it will be on February 24th and 25th this year.
I love GCA!

I enjoyed my one round there and am keen to return.

The best bits are at either end of each nine. The opener is short, driveable, and has a neat false-front. The 4th is semi-blind to a deep fall away green. The 10th is a text book long Par 3. The middle stretches of each nine each have the awkward bit that Ross is prone to have a on a flat side but they work well, especially on the back.

The strength is in the variety of the one-shotters, the cool opener, and solid 5-5 finish.

Constantly blamed by 8-handicaps for their 7 missed 12-footers each round.

Thank you for changing the font of your posts. It makes them easier to scroll past.
