Inverness plan?
« on: December 10, 2017, 02:17:08 PM »
Anyone have a good, detailed synopsis of what's being done at Inverness?

I have read that the Fazio holes are being altered and that two par-3 holes are being "restored" but on different parts of the property than they were before.

I'm somewhat familiar with the pre-Fazio routing as I've seen it in my World Atlas of Golf but I wouldn't expect them to re-create that.

 8)  How detailed do you want???  I saw about 4 holes progress this past Aug, but didn't linger or take pics of the dirt.  My first play in 49 years since high school... and focus was on host and the challenge.

ps Certainly a good reason to play golf on the TU team!

If Andrew Green is running around on here, I'll leave it to him to provide the detail (his Twitter feed is also recommended).  The basics are as follows:

Hole 2 - Green lasered and relocated back and to the right approximately 50 yards.  This will make it more of a contrast to Hole 11 and provide some added length from the back tees while maintaining the interesting slopes of the original green.

Old Holes 3, 5, and 6 will be replaced entirely.  Old Hole 4 now becomes new Hole 6 and flows right into old Hole 7.  Those two long par fours (old Holes 4 and 7) will now be played back to back, which had been the case from the course's inception right up until the Fazio work in the late 70s.

New Hole 3 - Heading south along the same general direction as Holes 1 and 2, this will be a new long par three played along a slope moving gently from right to left.  The land on which it sits is the previously unused prairie to the right of the old Hole 5.

New Hole 4 - This is a short/medium length dogleg left par four played back up the first half of the old Hole 5 fairway, with a slightly uphill approach to a well-contoured green located just south of the old Hole 3 pond.

New Hole 5 - This is a medium length par three played on a north/northeast diagonal with a green set very near the old Hole 3 green.

Hole 8 - New green complex moved about 30 yards to the right of the old green.

This work will likely receive most of the attention, but the adjustments to the fairway mowing patterns, green expansions, mounding, and bunkers are all very exciting.

No, that's great.... just wanted to get the general idea. I've seen some photos of new holes but I couldn't tell which ones they were in context with the rest of the course.

I am very excited to see these changes.  Kudos to the Inverness membership for being this bold.

I thought Inverness had some of the best holes that I have ever played on a Ross course, including the current 4th, 7th, 15th, 17th and 18th.  My criticisms mostly concerned the 3, 5 and 6 holes.

Inverness could be the best course in the state if these changes are done well.

Brian

Can you venture a guess as to what this does for the "total walk" for member play?

Corey, this definitely improves the overall walk and flow of the golf course as it gets rid of the two longest walks in the old setup (Hole 4 to Hole 5, Hole 6 to Hole 7) and installs much shorter replacements.  The old walk between Hole 3 and Hole 4 is also improved as the new Hole 5 green is just a little closer to the old Hole 4 tee (now Hole 6).

Inverness is very mindful of pace of play, and walking with single bag caddies is an important part of the club's identity.  Shaving five to six minutes off the front nine time through the updated routing is a big improvement before even considering the difference in how the new holes will play.  With water hazards playing a lesser role in the new designs, one has to think they will play faster than the old Hole 3 and Hole 5 ever did.

Brian:

Thanks for the thoughts.

Is the creek to the right of current 5 or mounds to the left of the current 5 being incorporated into the new 3-5?  I thought those were wonderful natural features that were misused in the previous versions of those holes, but could be great.

The new dogleg left 4th will play a tee shot into the first half of the old 5th fairway before turning slightly up and to the left for the approach.  As a result, the old creek from the 5th will now run along the inside of the dogleg to confront those who gamble on a tee shot down the left side in an attempt to shorten the approach.  It will also cut in front of the player as they hit that approach shot.  The mounds will provide a visual backdrop for the tee shot but will only come into play for those drives sent well off-line to the right.

Here's an article from yesterday's Toledo Blade with some images and more info on the project (including an image of the new master plan):
