Cheers Niall,

Tim and I have agreed on Sunday 13th.

The tee is currently free from 11.40 onwards according to Silloth's BRS system.

https://www.brsgolf.com/sillothonsolway/visitor_day.php?d_date=2019-01-13&nav_date=2019-01-13&course_id=1

That gives us up to 4 tee times before the 4 hour twilight cut-off.

Thought it might be easier to set-up a Doodle. If you'd like to join, just put your name by Thursday. Niall can then speak with the secretary about times if that works?

The North Berwick West Golf Club Gents Dinner is Saturday the 12th Jan, full-monty kilts and pass-the-port job so I'll have to consider my priorities.....

Could be just the thing to shake the cobwebs off after a late night!  ;D

Well done Tim and bad luck Niall,

Duncan will be a tough opponent!

I'd love to join you all at Silloth but suspect I may struggle. I'll keep my eye on how your plans develop though...

Cheers,

James

I would love to do it.  Put me on the Yankee Doodle app.  Josie would not be available, alas, due to horrible childhood memories of Silloth...........

Tim, that's all very well for you to say as you have the imposed discipline of a 10pm train to,  catch leaving the rest of us to support the club's 'catering' operation until the wee small hours.

The last two or three years have seen a winter Northern get together (sadly snowed off in 2018).  Why not make this Silloth trip that?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

So far it appears there are 6 of us;

Tim
Duncan
Rich
Sean (possible)
Mark (?)
and myself.

I'll start another thread and see if we can drum up more interest.

Niall,

I was down as a possible but can’t do that weekend unfortunately. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for the get together this time around!

Niall, put me down as a possible. I suspect I'll be at the wrong end of the country but you never know.

Happy to give it a go this year!
And not a bad go, either.....

It was fantastic to get back to Silloth today, and a wonderful match it was against Duncan. After seeing him jar a 40 footer on the first, I thought I was in for a long day...

The breeze was strong, but actually less than I might have built up in my mind. Generally through the dunes it was ok. It was only when you arrived at exposed tee boxes like 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 13 green that you felt the full force. In the end, I holed a few putts around the turn that ended up being the difference, and managed to win a good match.

Aside from the wonderful company, I continued to be incredibly impressed with the golf course. Here's just a few thoughts from the round on the course:

- I loved the first green say in that little bowl. I can't think of a similar opening green that i've played!
- The 3rd is possibly even better than I remember it to be, and just love how natural it takes the landform
- 4 is a gem of a hole, and shows how you can make the surrounds of a green compelling without bunkers
- Loved the little bank on the high-side of the 5th green. If you clear the two bunkers short of the green, you can run a nice little shot in there and feed it down to the pin.
- Like the 1st, I loved the green at 7 - so natural
- 13 might be the best par 5 in the UK. We discussed this point after the round, and I think there aren't many in its league. Maybe the 17th at Muirfield? Any others?

Overall, I hope to get back to Silloth soon (in the summer) and thank you to Mark for organising a stellar competition. A shout out as well to Mark C for a nice assist :)

The first green reminds me hugely of #1 @ Carnoustie!

FBD,

I can see what you mean with the Carnoustie comparison for #1 but I always thought it was more similar to the 1st green at the Machrie. I haven’t seen many photos of the changes there so not sure if it survived the recent renovation.

Very well done and commiserations to Duncan but well played in getting to the final.

Of the holes you highlighted ie. 1, 3, 4, 7 and 13, it's notable that they have a grand total of two bunkers between them !
