All the St Andrews courses are closed until next week, even the clubhouses are closed until the weekend.


Deal was open and on main greens until this morning, probably the only open course in the land!

A few answers.


Yes, winner of match 1 will play winner of match 2, etc.


Can we try and get these matches played by end of April, please?


Duncan, yes, we meet in round two (though the way I'm playing at the moment I wouldn't rule out a shock result seeing Bye make it through to the second round).  Let's give it a go.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I'll be in Florida from 3/14 to the end of May, so me playing Clyde by the end of April will not be possible, particularly since all golf in Scotland will be kaput for the next two weeks or so.  Alas....


If we can defer that to early June, let me know.  Otherwise, I'm going to change my last name to Bye for next year...

Can I recommend Downfield in Dundee - which is a gem and the first 14 holes are good not too sure about the last 4. It was designed by CK Cotton and my university team home course. Another is Caird Park a Colt course.

Boy! Andy Levett and I are miles apart!!  ;D  can I suggest we play Moortown at £50 rate before the end of March? others are welcome to join us as a four ball.


Andy - I have played Alwoodley and Sandmoor in North Leeds so Moortown could be a good bet. If you have any suggestions let me know

Hi Andy,


Lets make it sometime in April at a twilight rate we will see the course in a better nick as some golf courses need time to recover after a long cold spell as we are going through at present.


If there is anyone that would like to join Andy and I at Moortown - let me know

I will be down at the end of March for the 'Winter Meet' otherwise we could look at somewhere around Perth/Dundee maybe. Possibly best to look at Links if it is going to be in March/April unless there is an inland course thereabouts which is a good winter venue.

Ben, Andy, Duncan, yes making it a fourball in the Leeds area sounds good.  Moortown is an obvious option but don't ignore Sand Moor and I haven't seen (and would like to) Horsforth (allegedly some Mackenzie), Pannal and Headingley.

I know my first game is a while off yet - but can I just check the format is straight up Matchplay, full allowances off the medal tees (assuming the course allows this)?

Headingley received rave reviews a couple of years ago from my friends in the Alister MacKenzie society.


Unfortunately I missed that day and have been meaning to visit ever since.


Pannal is also a lovely course.

Yes matchplay off full allowance.


Tees are as required by the host club or the pairs discretion. I recall one round last year when I played winner chooses the tee on the next hole, which brings a little interest, perhaps architecturally, into the match.


As lots of matches are played at neutral venues it might also be worth agreeing what to do in the event of a tie before getting underway?

Indeed the final was played that way.  Interesting because at least for me it’s something new.  With the honour you are in the driving seat and it’s one more decision to make, where does it give you the advantage? It’s not always clear and indecision is fatal. It depends on the club but I hope the idea catches on.

We can continue this via e-mail nearer the time, but in the spirit of this competition - or what I thought it was supposed to be about!? - it would be good to highlight a course truly under the radar...

I'm not sure the Angus courses really count for that, though Arbroath is unheralded and has some cool stuff.

Of those I haven't played, and were on my list of places to get to: West Kilbride (which probably doesn't count, either) and Glenbervie.

I don't know much about Stirling, except that it is a mix of Old Tom, Braid and Henry Cotton.

The landscapes of the Bridge of Allan and Auchterderran look pretty interesting, but might be best saved for an emergency nine?


To add to the candidate list, a few closer to Glasgow, which Niall might be able to comment on: Cawder, Ranfurly Castle, Pollok, Cathkin Braes, East Renfrewshire.

Of the Glasgow ones the only one I haven’t played is Cathkin Braes, which is a bit ironic as it’s the closest to where I grew up. It does have a pretty decent rep locally although not the flattest course you will ever play !! It has however produced some good players over the years the latest being Scott Jamieson.
 
Of the other Glasgow ones I’d happily recommend them all with the caveat that at this time of year and given the recent weather, parts of Cawder will be wet, most of Pollok will be very wet while Ranfurly Castle and East Ren are both moorland so will have the odd moist spot as well. Basically, inland golf in winter.
