JCB is the world's biggest manufacturer of backhoe loaders, and make a whole raft of other heavy construction machinery.

The first thing you are told when you visit JCB is that their new golf course has been conceived, designed, and built for one reason only - to sell diggers.

They are quite candid that their proclaimed aspirations to attract professional tour events are to exactly the same end - to sell diggers.

It shows.

The course was built in-house and has clearly involved the use of an awful lot of diggers shifting a colossal amount of earth and building a huge number of very big bunkers.

As a demonstration to potential purchasers of what can be achieved using an unlimited supply of heavy machinery there is no doubt that the new JCB golf course is a huge success.

I am sure that JCB customers from around the world will enjoy immensely the opportunity to play this spectacular course and place healthy orders for lots of backhoes and ancillary plant.

After touring the course Ben, Ken and I played Beau Desert and yesterday I played Cavendish with my wife and son. The contrast between JCB and these revered old classics could not be more startling. Whether that is in a good or a bad way I haven't quite made my mind up yet.

I think I'm still in shock!

I hope to have the opportunity to play the JCB course soon. What did you think of it?

JCB will be a exclusive golf club only open to members and corporate companies. No visitors will be allowed. It will be only open to top professional and amateur golf events for visitors to see the golf course.

Understood. I’m still interested in what you thought of it.

Its a golf course on steroids!! - the hardest golf course in UK for me which now eclipses St Mellion's Nicklaus course and demotes Celtic Manor's 2010 course to third place. Would be interested to see what the course rating is.  ;D ;D

Met DJ Russell on site he said it was an 'interesting new concept' and I would say its Doc's interpretation of a Strantz style course.

Sadly after dragging a jet-lagged Rich around I will have to concede my match to Jon, if this K/O is going to be completed this year. A shame, as I was eying a possible match-up around Portmahomack or Wick. Sorry.

As for the JCB Course, I'd be interested to know from Robin what he thinks the % saving was building it all 'in-house' with the JCB boys, versus a UK golf contractor?

This what puzzles me a little.

In one breath Mr Russell trotted out the party line about the course being all about selling machinery, and in the next he was talking about attracting European Tour events.

If the place is a showpiece for entertaining JCB customers and lavishing them with high class hospitality, why is the course so damned hard? Yes, there are four sets of tees, but very little difference between the Blacks and the Whites, with the Yellows a long way forward. Any half serious golfer among JCB's guests is going to want to play off the Whites at least - and will get beaten up royally. Any non-golfer attempting to play off the Yellows will get beaten up even more! Suggest that they play off the "Ladies" tees and they'll be insulted!

I'm not convinced that insulting or beating up your clients is the ideal way to commence negotiations on flogging them a fleet of new bulldozers!

I could understand if the company had aspirations to attracting the Ryder Cup to their course and then marketing the place to serious golfers in the aftermath. The extravagant mounding and the sheer scale of the course would certainly lend itself to spectator viewing. That however, does not appear to be in their plans.

Pity. It would make a great Ryder Cup venue.

The European tour is the least of their ambitions. The model for the course is the TPC at Deere Run in the States, built by John Deere. I wouldn't be completely surprised to see a WGC event there.

Folks

I've not been able to raise Andy Stamm to arrange our match. I don't know if Andy is still on this site or has gone off on a long sabbatical but would anyone mind if I put my name forward to the next round, or better still, would anyone like to stand in for Andy and give me a game ? I think I'd prefer that to getting through to the quarter finals without hitting a ball.

I'm pleased to say that Michael Graham has volunteered to step in and give me a game and hopefully we'll get something organized soon. Burntisland on Sunday 30th looks favourite at the moment so if anyone interested in joining us please let me know.

Might be doable. I’ll check the work schedule. Still got sore elbows though. (Inevitable Crap play pre-warning!)

Any news on the Boon/Dawson fixture?

I should warn you guys - I'm one indifferent round away from going up from 12 to 13...

I'm probably available this Sunday, Niall, and would like to play one of my erstwhile Clubs again, which is very much unknown by most GCA visitors to Fife (except for Wardo...).  Let me know if I'm selected and if so, at what time?

Michael beat me to it. It would great if you could make it. As Michael says we’re planning to meet up about 10.30 in the hope that there might be a bacon roll/cup of coffee available. Unfortunately Martin can’t make it so if Josie wants to join us she would be more than welcome.

My deepest apologies for my forgetting about yesterday at Burntisland.  Completely my fault/age/idiocy/etc. :-[   I owe you both a game  there or at Aberdour, at your convenience.

Tim Gallant and I enjoyed an excellent mornings sport on Saturday at Kingarrock the 9 hole hickory course a few miles outside of St Andrews. Despite it being his first ever game with hickories Tim performed well and hit some decent drives with a brassie smaller than a modern day rescue club. He proceeds to the next round with the whole of America cheering him on and looking for Ryder Cup revenge!

Mark,

Thank you very much for the game - it was a blast to see the wee course, and play with hickories for the first time. The surprising thing, as we said, was when you catch one flush, it really isn't too far behind a well struck shot with a modern club (provided the balls are equal).

Your game was fun to watch - a compact swing that led to many pars and wonderful shots. Hopefully it will be the first of other games in together in the future.

Michael and I had a good day at Burntisland. I hadn't played the course at all and Michael had only played once when he was a boy so it was really new to both of us. Lots of old fashioned golf with blind shots, ha ha greens, square greens, and funky par 3's. Really good fun.

With regards the game, I don't know either of us would qualify for the Ryder Cup but we had a fairly good game. We were both off the same handicap and it was no more than one hole in it for most of the round with Michael one up after nine. It went back and fro for a few holes before I managed to edge ahead at the end with a few up and downs. That said, neither of us were too worried about the match and really just enjoyed the round.

As an aside, a lovely course but also a very friendly club.

5 games left to play, I think.  Let's get those last two quarter finals played, please chaps....
In July I will be riding two stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity, including Mont Ventoux for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.
