I concur with the scenery being all world.
Although I enjoyed a few other courses - copper point a couple holes - I would strongly encourage not seeing another course if you were to only see Banff & Jasper.
If you were to include a third I would highly recommend Black Hawk and Jason's suggestion.
Black Hawk was excellent and worth the trip.

That said - my most important piece of advice -

See and play Banff in its original configuration - for me it wasn't even close - that is an exaggeration of course - but it is worth at least a full point maybe more.

Cheers

Tom - my guess is that none of the Alberta/BC modern courses will impress you.  Stay at Banff and ask them to play it from the original routing (leaving and returning to the 'castle').  If asked I believe they will do this for you.  Take the drive to Jasper - one of the true "wows" in life.  Play Jasper and fly back to Seatac.

P.S.

If you take the drive with JC (see above post) and Rich H. it will be a lot more fun.

Late May should be safe. I would be interested in what changing over to the A-4 has had on Jasper's greens.

Definitely stay at the Banff Springs Hotel. I found it much nicer than most hotels.
The cabins at Jasper can be a let down after staying at the great hotel, so you might want to go there first.

Tom,

I grew up in Montana and have been on many scenic roads in the western US. I begrudingly have to admit that Ian is right. Jasper/Banff is a truly special place.
Since you are in Deer Lodge, drive over to Georgetown Lake and view the mountain and lake scenery. It pales in comparison to the two national parks in Canada.

The third Stanley Thompson Rockies course is at Waterton Lakes NP just above Glacier NP. I know it's too far away to be included in this trip and is the runt of this litter.

I'd agree with Adam. You definitely want to stay at Jasper before Banff. Another great hotel, with a much better view, is at Lake Louise. It's about an hour north of Banff GC.

Peter - I've played Waterton twice - it's mostly forgettable.  It's a 9-hole course that had sand greens until 1948.

Peter - well I posted before I opened your link.  Waterton was nine holes until quite recently (within last 10 years).  They must have added a new nine.  JC

Tom:

     Great advice.

Play at Banff and Jasper - stay at the hotel at Lake Louise AND the Banff Springs Hotel.

At that time of year you'll feel like you're in Switzerland....
and you'll be loving life the entire time.

Surely one of the most beautiful places on this earth.

$$$$$ for the hotels, unless you stay outside the parks.

Tom,

Do not miss your chance to play Jasper and Banff.  They will not disappoint.

Tom, you already have a lot of advice, but I think you are heading there too early.  I went a couple of years ago - mid June - and the weather was hit and miss.  Flurries in Banff and two days later, short sleeves in Jasper.  I remember the drive from Banff to Jasper as being closer to 4 hours than 3.  3 days is not a lot of time.

Tom, I feel Jasper is worth 36 if you have the time. It trumps Banff to me in spades. The conditions should be pretty soggy and very unpredictable that time of year as everyone has noted.

Thinking about making it up to Banff and Jasper Park this summer.  Any updates on logistics would be welcome.

Bogey, 8) Logistics:- Beware of the Calgary Stampede in early July!  Lots of folks on either side of that major event enjoying Alberta...- We did loop of Calgary, Jasper, Edmonton, and back to Calgary as part of the Go Canada GCA event long time ago.- Played Kannanaskis (?sp) as a warm up on way into Banff, twilight round into late PM was fun, marshall told us he'd come out if bears were tracked getting close!- I seem to remember Adam C having a $180 taxi ride from Calgary airport to Banff.. its not far, but everything is relative, and they do drive on the right side of the road!   ::)  - One can really enjoy the ride from Banff up to Jasper, there's so many great vistas, it feels like you can reach out and touch the mountains!  Much more impressive than the Colorado Rockies.  Fill up tank before heading out from Banff and take a picnic lunch to enjoy somewhere. - When at Banff, an obligatory visit to nearby Lake Louise is a quick must, nearly a Gatlinburg experience there and some other local lakes, enjoy a meal looking out on the lake, very nice backdrop.- Cabin accommodations at Jasper were like a throwback to 60's economy, but clean and fine when we were there with GCA group, as stated they can't compete with Banff Hotel but we had some elk walking near our basic cabin one night, freakin out some folks,...that was interesting- After being in the Rockies, the ride to Edmonton was boring, boring, as was ride back to Calgary.  So idea to reverse the loop we did, is not bad, but on the other hand it makes it easier to leave flat land than the mountains!Golf: It was a Stanley Thompson and Rod Whitman immersion for us doing Banff, Jasper, then Blackhawk near Edmonton and Wolf Creekon approach back to Calgary.  I personally liked playing Jasper the best, being at Banff the most, really enjoyed the Whitman courses. We met the Super at Blackhawk, he knew gca folks were coming and had the place challenging to say the least, we missed meeting Whitman at Blackhawk as we got out before Jon Cummings, Mike Nuzzo, & Ric Holland did that day.  They had lunch with him as he was working on something there out of a tent.  We thoroughly enjoyed being in Calgary in transit, would take in more there next time. Brings back grand memories, enjoy at least a week to 10 days there if you can.

Later,

Do an overnight at Lake Louise. Two courses in Canmore near Banff are Silvertip and Stewart Creek. The first is photogenic cart golf, the latter a solid course built over mining. Check driving times Jasper/Edmonton and Edmonton/Calgary.

Michael:  I finally made the trip three years ago with my wife, the week of the US Open at Chambers Bay.  Weather was perfect except for a very wet round at Banff.  I'd had to cancel my original May trip because of a death in the family, but the week I'd planned to go was awful weather.

The two resorts are very different but I would strongly recommend you spend the $ and stay at both.  My wife loved them, although seeing a wolf come up the river bank to our cabin at Jasper was her special moment.  Plus the Canadian dollar is weaker by the day!
