‘Square’ greens in the UK

Seems there aren’t that many courses around the U.K. with ‘square’ greens these days.

Well here’s one that still has them - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.3388753,-3.0510456,17z/data=!3m1!1e3

Knighton GC close to the English/Welsh border - http://knightongolfclub.co.uk/ - and not that far from the likes of Kington, Llandrindod Wells, Church Stretton, Welshpool etc.

Kendal has a few surviving square greens. Most were redesigned in-situ, or in new locations (with the originals surviving as part of the fairway), as per USGA specs. during the late 1990s / early 2000s. Probably for the best, they ran out of money.

Out of character with the remainder of the course, the 12th at Elderslie is seriously squared.


The common denominator appears to be steep/hilly terrain...function before form!

Probably because those that were square have "evolved" over the years.  We worked on a course in New York called Copake CC where all the greens evolved to circles (but most had originally been squareish).  Google Earth it now and see what they look like after restoration  :)  It is very common for maintenance practices to soften those corners until they literally are all gone.

I remember a really cool hole 12? 11? a short driveable par 4
what a great stretch 9-12 is or it 11?

what a great stretch 9-12 is or it 11?


11 is the steeply downhill driveable 4 after the short, brutish par 3 tenth, ‘Mount Zion’!

The first at Braid Hills has something like a square green.  I thought of it when I first encountered Raynor.

My first thought was Painswick, but when looking on GoogleMaps none really fit the bill, with perhaps a few appearing like a  rhombus with rounded edges?  ::)


There are several at The Grove, no doubt a homage by Kyle Phillips to the older inland courses in the UK?

Quite a few were square at Painswick 30-40 years ago. When the club started using ride-ons, the corners appeared. The 1st was a square, 16 also, 12 and 17 more oblong, 7 was like a triangle. 3 and 8 have straight bits.
