Greg Norman's Ellerston Golf Course
« on: October 08, 2002, 08:15:25 AM »
Has anyone out there played or have pictures of this course?  This has to be the most secretive of all of Greg Norman's golf courses.  I have yet to hear a review or even see a picture of this course.

Ellerston was built in central New South Wales, Australia, for Australian media mogul Kerry Packer.  Very few people know anything about it, and this is intentionally so: it is a private course for Mr Packer's family and friends.  I've heard that it gets one round a day.

Havn't seen any pictures, but someone did say that it is the best inland course in Australia (ie. better than Royal Canberra).  I highly doubt that we'll ever hear any more than that.

You can expect a write up and photos of it in a new book of Australian golf courses which I believe will be out early next year.  The author has rated it the best modern course in Australia, and says that it is EXTREMELY difficult, and you really need to be a three marker or better who bombs it to be able to get it around.  It sounds like it would be an ideal venue for a skins game, no doubt shown on the Nine network.  Of course, the difficulty in publicising the course must be frustrating for Greg Norman Design, who would obviously prefer to show it off to the world.

Chris
I believe it is about three rounds per week, often Jamie Packer in a pair of speedos.

Sorry lads,

I played it a couple of weeks ago with KP, JP and his ex.
Yes Justin it was a very difficult track but mainly because of the speedo's factor. Mind you , I shot 187 but when your playing with JP's ex ( I cannot remember the lovely girls name)
you don't give a rats about the number you shoot.

Would certainly like to see her at the Skins game !

I think our quest should be to get some photos of the place.

There will be no shortage of titilating pics soon enough.

I know a photographer who has seen the property, and when asked how good it was, went searching for the thesaurus.

Justin,

What is the name of the author of the book on Aussie golf courses?  I would love to get a copy of it.

Thanks,
Erich

Paul,

Can you persuade said photographer to post a few to just tease us here in the states.

Bakerg:

Thank you for your enthusiasm about an O/S course, but it's not really my place to do such a thing. The relationship between the photographer, owner, and designer, will dictate everything, especially club policy from the owner. Cheers for now.

I was wondering if there was an update on the planned book that was going to include a write up on this course.

I just stumbled across this thread. If any of the non-Aussies have not seen it in other threads, I can tell you the book is out. It's "Australia's Finest Golf Courses" by Darius Oliver. There's a writeup on Ellerston with some fantastic photos by David Scaletti. The courses looks amazing. It's Kerry Packer's private golf course on his massive property near Scone in northern NSW. The course is attended to by around 24 staff who keep it in pristine condition for the handful of rounds each week.

Darius Oliver is a bright, personable and knowledgable young golf writer, whose passion for the game knows no bounds. He's played or visited all the worthwhile courses Down Under, and one suspects that Ellerston must be a cracker of a course to warrant so much attention. In the end-matter section of "Australia's Finest Golf Courses", Ellerston figures prominantly among Australian layouts in the ranking categories of various course features.

It will be fascinating to watch the marketing of this course evolve; right now in the honeymoon period, it suits to have people whisper in awe - one cannot drop a shot to par without hitting a ball. In five years, though, the owner and Greg Norman Golf Design may also share our frustration that a potential "all-world" course is not recognised as such, or worse, even known at all.

There is another issue that may ultimately influence access to Ellerston. Currently, the makeup of the Australian top-five is pretty well settled, albeit, few agree on the order. Somewhere in the mix lies Royal Melbourne (West), Kingston Heath, New South Wales, and Royal Adelaide. Variously, keen judges slip in Victoria, Metropolitan, and even RMGC (East) to round out the top-five. With a swag of new courses coming on stream, and a couple that may even threaten top-five positions, perhaps "keeping things under wraps" may not be in Ellerston's best interests, that is, if it wishes to be thought among the top-tier of Australian courses.
