Aside from the golf course, what do you love about your club?
« on: November 20, 2017, 10:52:03 AM »
What are the little things or big things that your club does that keeps you coming back or at least make it a place you like to go?

A bartender that knows your drink?  A great tournament run by the shop?  Slow play kept in check?

They allow dogs on the course [even though my current dog is too crazy to take with me].

It's quiet in the afternoons, so I know I could drive over nearly any day and get out if I want to.

The pro has been there 40 years, and is good friends with nearly every single member.  The superintendent has been there 30 years now.  The club lets them do their thing.

There's a small formal space in the clubhouse [which I never use], but the rest of the premises is completely informal.

I’m currently unaffiliated, but what I loved about my former club in Minnesota was that it was completely informal and the chef was highly proficient in the art of BBQ.

We have four holes that all start near our clubhouse and go in various directions, so any afternoon, and most mornings except weekends, you can wander up and go off in any direction, play 7, 5, 2 holes, whatever.   Its accepted behavior if there are open slots between other groups.  Same with jumping around, skipping holes, its pretty causal, just don't hold people up.  Lots of people just show up, so you hook up and go off to play some holes, its great.

A bunch of people bring their dogs up to run and swim in the river with the Super's dog every morning at sunrise.

Superintendent has been there 41 years, he's an encyclopedia for the place.

All the staff are treated like family, a very good vibe.

Great mix of older and younger members, terrific Men's grillroom where its like Las Vegas- you lose track of time, bartender who makes a great mix called a Rey Rey, outstanding GM , Pro , ASST Pros, and Caddymaster. Lastly, our tireless support of our caddy program- we provide meaningful employment to so many area high school and college kids which translates into some winning the Evans Scholarship. We also have another member funded scholarship , The Joe Nolan which helps those who do not get the Evans.  Our motto is : Treat your caddy as you would treat your son or daughter. I never get tired of being at Bev.

No tee times and less than 220 members.

Terrific head professional who enforces the rules.

A superintendent that has been at the club for 50 years.

The pro shop runs a Thursday evening 9-hole game where guys show up at 6:30 in the summer, get paired up randomly in groups by the pro shop, a different format is picked each week, and there is an informal dinner (pizza, burgers, tacos) in the golf house where one long table that can fit 40+ is set up so everyone can sit together.

Every Sunday afternoon after 3pm is Family night. Families receive preference on the golf course and you are encouraged to bring your kids out for a few holes of golf, swimming, dinner, etc. It's terrific as you never feel like you are clogging up the golf course or holding someone up if you bring your young child.

Our table service is so slow it's virtually impossible to get a DUI!

Also they never use a sand pro, relying completely on golfers to rake the bunkers; true pits of despair complete with footprints and uneven raking, enter at your own peril.

I can show up without any prior planning and wind up on the tee with an enjoyable group within a half hour.  It is not at all unusual to start with two people on an evening round, expand to 5, then 7 and finish with 4.

Pro V1's on the range.  It seemed like a crazy extravagance when I joined but I now find I really miss them when at another course.

Fire pit with a view of the final 3 holes.  No better way to finish a formal event or an inter-group competition than enjoying a nice sunset and heckling the groups finishing behind you.

sitting in the bar after a sunday comp, counting the limes in my glass(signyfying how many G&T's had been sunk) and having some ludicrous side bets whilst watching the golf on the telly!! Good times and without doubt the most alcaholic club I have ever stepped foot in..

All these seem to share a common thing:  it's the people.  I've said it before that most golfers don't care about the venue or the architecture as much as they care about where their buddies play.  It all starts with a great staff.  Almost everything mentioned we do except Pro V1 range balls and caddies.  The beer guys tell us we sell way more beer than any other course in our area.  Not sure that's a good thing, but it does seem to support the informal social setting.

The bartender knows my drink, the shop runs a very fine tournament every weekend, and the pace of play is always brisk, but please bear in mind that we are not all so lucky as to love the course.

One of the best things I like about our club is the strong walking golfer culture. Walkers face no discrimination and are allowed on the course anytime. I recently purchased an electric golf caddy and for a small fee I am able to store it at the club and recharge the battery on site. A great service and it allows me to get my exercise several days a week.

Plus you have some nice Chick Evans memorabilia. And I agree the Nolan's are a great family- lucky to have them at Bev.

Robert,

This reminds me of something John K said years ago "Private clubs are not about who you let in, but who you get to keep out!"

P.S.  I never belonged to a private club, but I have been in mens clubs for local courses.  The best part for me was the tourneys...

No tee times.

Incredible views from the clubhouse - seven-miles of unobstructed water view down the river to the downtown skyline.

No homes on the golf course.

Nearly 95-years of history.

I've seen "no tee times" mentioned by several people.  I don't really understand the importance of this.

If no tee times are needed because the course is never crowded, then even if there were tee times, couldn't you still just show up and play?

If you can't have outings or groups because there are no tee times, couldn't you have the same policy and still use tee times for regular play?

On several occasions, I've visited clubs that have no tee times, and seen large numbers of players milling around trying to figure when they can get out.  Yes, everyone gets out. But seems like you have to negotiate and wait - the very thing the tee time helps avoid.  At busier times, seems like unnecessary hassle and stress just to say you have "no tee times."

What am I missing?
