OT - Congratulations Lukas Michel
« on: September 19, 2019, 07:11:56 PM »
Regular GCA poster and my fellow Metropolitan member Lukas Michel has just won the US Mid-Amateur.

A fantastic achievement by a fine young man and knowledgeable architecture buff.

Well done, Lukas.

Cheers,

Andrew

What an achievement!! It couldn't happen to a better person.

Lukas played holes 28-35 in 4-under to win the final 2/1.

Will he the first regular GCA poster to play in the Masters?

Do you have to make the cut to be considered playing in the Masters?

Congratulations to Lukas!

The first time I played with Lukas at North Berwick, we were on the second hole and he hit a drive that the rest of the group thought was borderline on the beach. We were humming and hawing about whether he cleared the corner. After looking for a few minutes, we realised he was 5 yards short of the right greenside bunker, roughly 350 yards from the tee  :o

Very fine indeed!
My goodness: the U.S. Mid Amateur.
I can't imagine doing *anything* as well you do golf. I dare say few of us can.
Congratulations, Lukas.
You now have carte blanche to offer even the most preposterous of architectural theories, and no one here can say peep about them! :)

Wow - that is great news congratulations to Lukas! - all the Aussies on GCA are pumped up.

The Masters and US Open will be wonderful experiences I suspect Geoff Ogilvy will be giving a few tips on Augusta and Winged Foot.

Noticed in another article Lukas was wearing a top with Winged Foot logo on it - a typical GCAer I have to say.

How about GCA supporting Lukas - maybe a tour golf bag with GCA logo's on it if we crowdfund for it (if Ran allows for this as well as the organisers of the two events allow for it)  - I am sure there will be a few supporters on this site.

Impressive play not only in his finals match but what he did down the stretch in the semis and quarters...   Down Under should be very proud of their new champion!   CONGRATS

Congratulations Lukas.  I recall hearing a story that when Sammy Schmitz first played at Augusta he panicked and bought a bunch of hybrids because of how long the course played when it was cold and wet.  Apparently it is a very different course in April.

Congratulations Lukas!

I remember reading one post asking the question of what sort of discussion would be had by two board participants (player and caddie) on ANGC... paraphrasing 'Do you mean aim at the Perry Maxwell or Press Maxwell bunker edge?'

I couldn't find the thread...

Never heard of him.
Or, from him for that matter.

Ben Stephens that was probably a Metro logo.

It was Winged Foot! He also wore a Metro hat.

LUKAS MICHEL: Well, I wore a Winged Foot sweater for the first nine holes today. Played there last year. Just a casual round with a member, someone I knew. So I guess I've got an early look at the course there.

Small world: Unfortunately I had no idea until now that Lukas is a GCAer!

I caddied for the son on a client in the US MidAm. The day before the qualifying rounds we played a practice round at CommonGround. This nice young Aussie and good player named Lukas Michel was in our group. We had a very pleasant afternoon--Lukas and I chatted about his course Metropolitan as well as Royal Melbourne and Sand Hills, which he'd just visited before the MidAm--and wished each other well. As it turned out, three of our foursome made the cut, including Lukas and my player, who went from +1 through 32 holes to +6 through 35 holes only to make a 35 foot putt with a 6 foot break on the last hole to make the cut on the number at +5 (he made the final three in an 18 for 6 playoff for the final match play spots before losing out on the 5th hole). The other player in our group who made match play lost in the first round and turned to caddying for Lukas. I went out to watch Lukas play Stewart Hagestad in the semifinals, where Lukas made a great late round comeback to win. He's a fine fellow with a lot of game, and if he is a golf course architecture geek all the better!

PS CommonGround showed very well in the medal qualifying rounds; the greens there are terrific. The par 3s played particularly difficult--I think the 6th and 17th holes played as the hardest holes during qualifying.  Coore and Crenshaw's Colorado Golf Club played firm and fast and is a great match play course. The par 3 second is one of the great short par 3s I've seen, requiring the precision one might expect of a hole that length; however, a couple of the holes--the par 5 16th and par 3 17th in particular--seem over the top in the fashion of Bandon Trails #14. Some players were putting off the 17th green into a hazard er "penalty area" during qualifying...

Another Lukas playing at the pebble beach senior tournament today.  Says he's want to get a degree in landscape architecture and design public golf courses.
