The article makes it sound like olive trees will replace an existing golf course. I don't think that's the case. I think a course was planned for this community but they've now decided to go in another direction. Feels a little disingenuous to me.

Mark,

It is indeed the case...this was posted in GCA.com a few months ago.

Years ago, I looked at a project in Palm Springs that proposed converting a vineyard and I think some olive groves to golf.  Major objection was golf would use too much water.  They hired and engineer, and it turned out the crops used 3-4 times more water than golf.

Seems like there should be some objection to this, shouldn't there?

I'm not sure exactly what you're referencing, Kalen. The Yahoo link only shows CGI renderings of olive trees in a community. I see no footage of an actual golf course and no photos of an actual golf course.

I went "back in time" with Google Earth and there is no evidence of a golf course ever existing in this location. Looks like it was graded for a course and lakes were built at some point between 2006 and 2009, but I don't think construction proceeded any further than that.

From the article about halfway down.  The course was built and in place:

"The 309 acres for Miralon were originally entitled in 2003, and in 2005 real estate developer SunCal went about developing it as a golf course community. SunCal had built roughly half of the lots as well as the golf course when its financing partner Lehman Brothers had to foreclose on the property and the project was put up for sale, according to Bradley Shuckhart, Freehold’s California Division President."

That was , indeed , a Schmidt -Curley course called Avalon.  Mainly a residential effort of mid-century modern architecture units with golf as open space. Almost made it to the finish line when Lehman Brothers went down hard . Mostly  par threes, a couple of fours, executive effort for Sun Cal.   Bunch of water features . The rep always wanted more "wow" as in......" Gary was on on 13 and said we need some more Wow!".... Grant Haserot in our office did the majority of design and visits.

I remember being summoned once for a mandatory  big meeting  on site with the Lehman Brothers ........we waited around about an hour past the set time when a caravan of black Cadillac SUV's came barreling past us, blowing up a heap of dust in our faces ...... and kept on going. ...and that was it!

Also, the main Sun Cal cat  was on site when a plane went overhead and asked how often that happened. The property was essentially, right next to the airport, in the flight path ,and he was unaware. Shows how much due diligence went into that purchase! Just goes to show that, in real estate, if the market is hot, even the biggest idiots make money. And when its not.....

Its not an either/or question. Sustainable farming and sustainable golf could co-exist side by side if you could just keep the "golf industry" out of it and listen to someone who thinks differently.
The golf needs to be active, walking, sustainable in that it needs to be maintained as a paying field with minimalist approach to design, construction and maintenance. Think of it as an enhanced walking trail, instead of on over maintained, lighted fountain laded, orderly lawn garden. Allow some of the chaotic design mentality of the pre golden age back in and get away from "everything must be orderly" method of today's design and maintenance.
Then use the same facilities, labor pool, and water to provide produce, fruit, herbs...whatever.  But for God's sake don't hire the same ole golf people and expect something different.
