Ross in NJ
« on: October 16, 2017, 12:03:22 PM »
Raritan Valley CC (fka Somerville CC) is credited in a few sources as an H. H. Barker course.

The lay out may have been Barker, but it sounds like Ross was brought in to do the bunkering scheme.

Lawrence Brook was also known as Lone Pine CC in its very early days, a course name included on several Ross lists.  Same founder, same location.

I don't live too far from where Lawrence Brook was. Wish it was still around!

There seems to be a number of instances where Ross did a bunker plan for a golf course routed by someone else. Particularly between, roughly, 1912 and 1922. Is that something borne out by your research?

Bob:

Not only Ross, but a number of other architects as well.  Seems like it was the easy fix to bring an early course "up to code."  That being said, there are only a few examples of bunker schemes being created by a different architect for a recently designed course.

Ross got a bunch of press for this update work as he was the USGA's guy for prepping US Open courses during the time period you mentioned.

I like your phrase that Ross and others were brought in to bring golf courses "up to code".

I didn't know that Ross had a relationship with the USGA during the period.

Bob:

Dan Moore brought up the Midlothian connection in an offline email thread a while back.  If you track the other host courses during that time frame and when Ross did work there, the connections are more than just coincidental.
