Gentlemen,

Thanks so much for the help. We've nixed Trump International in favor of Emerald Dunes which had the available tee times. I also liked the $120 vs the $300 plus that Trump wants for unescorted play.

My hopelessly snobbish friends won't play anything with the word "Muni" in it so Lake Worth Muni is out. I'll try to hit WPBCC the next time I'm down there.

One respondant suggested we try to play the Everglades Club - an old Seth Raynor design. My recollection is that if a guest was of the wrong "persuasion" the host could lose his membership  :o. Has that changed?

I thought I'd also mention that the suggestions you all gave me and my wife this past July when we drove down from Vancouver to Bandon were first rate. Much thanks ;).

Herman:

I've been told the Everglades Club and Palm Beach Country Club have memberships that are pretty much non-Jewish and Jewish.  From the boat, the Palm Beach Country Club looks like it sits on a very interesting site with hills - unusual for South Florida.  I don't know how guests fit in to the mix.

FWIW, my old intern was club champ at Everglades Club a year ago.

John--

Your initial impressions of Palm Beach Country Club from the water are accurate.  It's on a surprisingly good piece of property in the North end of Palm Beach.  It's a bit of an anomaly as it appears as if it's on some sort of rocky terrain.  When you drive to the Southwest of the club, you go through an area where you have some relatively tall rock walls on each side of the road.  PBCC is a Donald Ross design.

The course is relatively short as you would expect on a tight piece of land in Palm Beach.  It has a nice variety of short holes, from a little 100 yarder uphill to a 225 yarder.  Actually, there is a lot of variety in all of the holes, even the par 5s, although you wouldn't think that by looking at the scorecard.  Either 11 or 13 will play against the wind and will play relatively long.

Herman Barron was the longtime head professional at the Palm Beach CC. He was a wonderful golfer, an avid gin rummy enthusiast (much to chagrin of some of the members), and eventually made his way to Boca Rio where he finished his career. I remember him at the PBCC where my Grandfather was a member.

I also remember Rose Kennedy playing her nine holes of golf at the club around 4:00 pm most afternoons. Evidently Joe and Rose couldn't gain admission to the Everglades so Rose wound up changing her golf shoes in the comfort of her limousine at the PBCC. Fortunately for her, the 1st tee was a short walk from the then club entrance - it must have been awkward for her.

Unfortunately, my sense as to what the Everglades is like today is colored by the stories of old. I hope it is no longer the case where a member could get tossed if he brought an individual for lunch "who would not otherwise qualify for membership."

It seems to me that the individuals who are attracted to this website are much more ecumenical in their thinking.

Come to think of it, i thought PGA National wasn't too bad. It needed work when I played it, and if I am not mistaken, I think Jack Nicklaus may have redesigned it.
