Peter:   Exactly.   That's what I meant to say.   May I email my posts to you before submitting and ask you to then post what I was trying to say?

Kalen:  Ouch.  I wasn't thinking of water.    Suppose you hit your 9-iron exactly the correct distance but it hits five feet right of the green.   Or suppose you fly the pin and land one foot off the back edge.  You shouldn't expect to lose either ball in deep grass.

"2)  My pet peeve is losing balls near the green.  If your approach shot hits on or near the green, you shouldn't lose your ball.  I strongly believe THAT is poor design!"

So these two holes are poor design?

Yes, they are poorly designed holes. They are not the design of Dr. Mac. They are the addition of a water crutch by a modern architect during the dark ages of gca.
 ;)

Note: It is my understanding that a dam was used to create an addition of water to those hazards. My apologies if I am mistaken.

Garland is on point today.  Also the front part of the 12th green is missing.  Also the trees behind the green require heaters under the green and winter lighting at times.  Form over function at ANGC.  but it looks pretty  ::) ::)

Also I texted my old man yesterday who is around a 23 handi, at the course I grew up on which is a Doak 5, he loses 2-3 balls every 4 rounds, not one round.  More goats and animals on the links please.

Garland and Ben:
Out of curiosity, what Doak-scale score would you give ANGC as it exists right now?

BCowan

Carl,

I'd have to play it to give a Doak rating.  I'll get back to you on that one  :D .  Mr Bogey didn't do his annual ANGC bashing thread so I have some pent up complaints.

I haven't played it. But, I think raters give it too much credit for punting on year round maintenance, and rate it for its immaculate maintenance during its open season, and too much credit for hosting a popular tournament that many like to use as a signal to the beginning of the golf season. The only reason it hosts a major tournament is because Arnold had won there while he had not won the Western Open which was the true major at the time.

So Garland, you won't give it your own Doak rating because you haven't played it, but you are willing to say that others who have played it must be overrating it?  Ok.

No, I am saying what a Golfweek rater is saying.
"I loved playing there, but take away the Masters Tournament and the course is just a very nice, extremely well-conditioned golf club.

—Anonymous Iowa rater"

And only Tom Doak can give a true Doak rating. ;)

I need them both.
