Country Club of Scranton
« on: September 14, 2017, 11:25:14 AM »
I had the pleasure of playing CC of Scranton earlier this week and, quite frankly, I was blown away! I had heard it was very good but I thought it was simply outstanding.
The vistas, green sites, bunkering, routing, just about everything about the course was exceptional. It is a poster child club as to what tree removal can do for a course.
Kudos to superintendent/GM Greg Boring and his staff for what they have accomplished.

If anyone has played there since the restoration I would be curious if you were as impressed as much as I was....and where does CCS rank in the pantheon of Travis courses?

I have played Stafford, Yahnundasis, Orchard Park, Onondaga, Cherry Hill (pre- restoration), Equinox (pre and post Rees Jones renovation) and Ekwanok and I put Scranton ahead of them all, IMO.

I think it has the 2nd best (most varied and strategically interesting) set of greens in PA.

Watched the pros play there on Mondays after the Hartford Open when I was a kid and the course has only gotten better since then through restorative efforts and loving Superintendent care.

I did not play CC of S pre-restoration.  I have seen it a few times post-restoration, including just a few weeks ago.  The place is so much fun.  And I believe a set of greens to rival the best I've ever played.

My list of Travis courses I've seen would be:

Garden City
Cape Arundel
Hollywood

Scranton
Ekwanok
Troy

Lookout Point
Westchester S
Westchester W
Round Hill
Stafford

Equinox

Scranton is fantastic, and Greg has done an amazing job there.  More than anything I'd like to see the three altered greens restored, because I think it'd rival any set of greens in the country.

Which three greens were modified, Blake?  And do you know when these changes occurred?

When I met Greg I asked him if all the greens were original Travis and if memory serves me correctly I want to say that he mentioned that greens 4, 5 and 11 were not original Travis greens. Can't remember the fourth!

There are only 3 that are not original Travis.  John you are correct 4,5,11.

Greg would know better than I (seeing as how he's the one who told me), but I remember him saying the superintendent in the 50s softened them, perhaps because they were too severe.

I played Scranton with Joe's group a few weeks ago. I had been told wonderful things and it exceeded my already high expectations.
The green complexes are beyond anything I have seen on this side of the state. The tree removal program has really created a wonderful sense of scale. It is a big league course.

I'll echo all the comments from the guys from Philly. Like Joe I hadn't played it pre-restoration but what's there now is fantastic. Travis built some wonderful green complexes every place he went. I am still amazed at how well he did with Troy considering the severity of the land.

Ok, given that we all agree that Scranton is very special where would you Philly guys rank it if it were located in the metropolitan Philadelphia area instead of in Scranton?  Is there anything that is clearly better? Would it be Top 3? Top 5? Top 10?

Thanks.

It would be #3 by many.  Perhaps even me.   ;)

If Pine Valley is included in the Philly metro area, then I agree with Dr. Bausch: third. Not a single bland hole.

How does it compare to Philadelphia Cricket Club? I have not played there since the restoration but it looks fantastic in photos that I have seen.

Third best course in the GAP region?

Hmm...would have to mull that a little bit but I would say that the fact another clearly superior course doesn't jump to mind out of all the amazing competition is indicative of how good Scranton really is.

I am a big fan of  Philadelphia CC Spring Mill and Lancaster .  In a 10 round scenario, how does Scranton compare to PCC Spring Mill

Certainly top 5 in GAP, even higher if they didnt Fazio treat all the bunkers.  Second best set of greens in GAP for sure.
