Healdsburg Golf Club at Tayman Park - Seeking History
« on: September 01, 2017, 11:08:51 AM »
Hi All - I'm doing some work on a 9-hole course called the Healdsburg Golf Club at Tayman Park (in Healdsburg, CA) that was founded in 1921.  The course's website claims some Mackenzie involvement but I've seen no other sources confirming this.  Does anyone have any information or any historic photos to share?  I'd love to see an old aerial but anything would be helpful.

Thanks,
Matt

Well, of course MacKenzie didn't come to the US for the first time until 1925, so he would not have designed the original course.  It's possible he sketched some potential changes after that.  Where is Healdsburg?

Thanks for the response, Tom.  Healdsburg is in Sonoma County, California, about an hour north of San Francisco.

For what it's worth, Northwood, which is another 9-holer about 20 miles to the southwest of Healdsburg, also claims a Mackenzie pedigree (though, from what I've heard, more likely Robert Hunter) and was built in 1928.

Matt, there is a bit of material on Healdsburg Golf Club at Newspapers.com.  I have a subscription and can send along the one article of interest from 1922 if you PM me with your e-mail addy.

Copied below is a Nov. 1, 1922 Oakland Tribune article on the inception of the club.  The course was first noted in the Annual Guides in 1925 as a 9 hole 2,292 yard course.  Later guides note the distance as closer to 3,000 yards.

Fantastic stuff, thank you Joe and Sven!  Very interesting that they've emphasized the playground for children, including an "enclosure that prevents them straying"!  It's also (possibly more) remarkable that 90% of the description of both the course and the town still applies, 95 years later.

I suppose there was no further mention of the course to be found in Newspapers.com, particularly in connection with MacKenzie around, say 1928-29?

Either way, this is great background stuff and I appreciate you guys digging it up.

Joe, I'm sorry to see that you won't be joining us for the TWGS Little Rhody event next week!  Looking forward to finally meeting Mike Cirba though.  We'll have to play another round together soon...

Cheers,
Matt

Matt:

There are other mentions of the course, but nothing noting any involvement by Mackenzie.

Hi Matt,

I have some old photos of Tayman Park I came across doing research at some of the libraries nearby Healdsburg.  Will have to dig them up but I'll get them to you.

MacKenzie definitely was not involved.

Great to hear from you Josh!  I hope you're doing well and I'd certainly appreciate any old pictures you can throw my way.  matt@greengrassengineering.com would probably be easiest for both of us.

Cheers,
Matt
