Sticking with the homer theme, I'd say Wild Horse has a set of best shortest.

par 3 11th
par 4 15th
par 5 17th

And that is just the backside 9... ;)

I'll take the short par 4 8th at PVGC. You can do whatever you want to do off the tee (except miss the fairway) and from there just trying to hit that green and in the right place is really a piece of work. The hole gives the golfer sort of a tee shot choice of setting up the approach to be long and narrow or shallow and wide!!

But the green is contoured in sort of rolling stair steps and if you aren't careful with the type of wedge you hit to it you can spin the ball all over that green into real trouble.

The finals of the Crump Cup and how the competitors played that hole is pretty representative of it. Tallent (the eventual winner) missed the fairway left, chipped out to about 50-60 yards and hit the pin hard with his third shot sending it back off the false front into the thick rough.

Goodes, his opponent, was right in the middle of the fairway about 70 yards, hit a beautiful low wedge in there right next to the pin with too much spin, and it spun back, caught the false front into the heavy rough in front. He chipped a bit short of the top of the false front and it came back. Tallent chipped to about 6 inches for a gimme bogie and Goodes did the same for the half in bogie!

Dick, re the 15th....what is that new construction going up next to a house on the right side of the hole...weirdest looking new construction I've ever seen.

Carlyle, the real hotdogs are called sausage dogs. The hotdogs are for the visitors who are afraid of the spicy food we have. I am sorry I missed you. A friday afternoon game would have been fun. I was told the quarter was very quiet sat night with all those dog fans wondering around dazed and confused.

Kevin, I haven't been there since spring.  But, if you mean the house that looks more like a rudimentary pro-shop/club house that is on the corner hill of the property just to right of 15 tee , I agree, it is unfortunate.  As the homes fill in, and given that the home subdivision has very minimal covenents or design restrictions, the charm of the Wild Horse setting will be lost.  Roof lines and home designs that may be more oriented to save money in construction costs rather than follow some design aesthetic will become a greater negative of the project.  That is the unfortunate trade-off in a small community project that needed to sell off the lots soon after construction on the course began, inorder to keep out of debt that such a fragile project in a small economy could afford to take on.  Gothenburg does not have a large base of potential home builders, and as a tiny Union Pacific rail town, can't ask the big bucks and restrictive covenents.

Dick, that house near the tee on 15 (that looks like a pro-shop) is not the one I'm talking about...it is right next to it....it is a "house" under construction that the four of us couldn't make head or tail out of....was a 2-story plan that was 30-40% completed...the facade looked like commercial construction...some sort of tile facade....you could see it from many parts of the back nine...a real eyesore.  Too bad that the housing is a necessary evil there.  Loved the course.

After last weekend I would have to nominate... ;)

The 230-240 yd , PAR 3, 5th hole at Pine Valley GC as the world's "SHORTEST GREAT PAR 5". ;D

The horror stories and the high scores were never ending on that hole. I still have not figured out how to best play that hole...it absolutely ate my lunch!  It played into the wind almost every day. I saw quite a few drivers come out of the bag on that tee. It was brutal.

Wow, I loved that picture Ian posted from PV (#8 is it?)  You'd have to have one heck of a pair on you to go for that green!  If ever there was a hole that was designed for match play...

probably won't qualify in "the greatest" category, but I'll throw out:

Par 3
#3 at Pine Needles - don't leave it above the hole

Par 4
#10 at Riviera - can you cut a driver onto a green the width of a parking space?

#15 at Prestwick - especially after a few Kummel's in the clubhouse

Best Par Three: 4th at OHCC West. 140 yards. Uphill to a severe green with horseshoe contouring. Seven Bunkers surround it. Ross at his best.
Best Par Four: 14th at OHCC East: Only drivable for pros, but two-tiered green is hard as a rock and has zero easy hole locations. Shaun Micheel made double on friday before birdie binge.
Best Par Five:11th at OHCC West. The right side is harder to find, and it yields few good lies. However it gives the best angle to green, which is cut in half by a valley.
