Disguising multiple tees
« on: August 14, 2017, 02:55:56 PM »
There are a few ongoing threads at the moment, some involving me (!), about appropriate length etc.

One reoccurring theme is the positioning of tees, or multiple tees.

If tees, multiple tees, are to be positioning much, much further forward, or indeed much, much further back, then should they be disguised in some way* or should they be in visible positions?

Thoughts?

I find positioning tees to be a good deal of fun, particularly on contoured sites.

Generally speaking, tees that are far out front in play are better off hidden or placed with a very light hand on the land.

Thomas,

Fazio does a great job of this by contouring the entire tee area, often using subtle ridges behind forward tees so you don't even see them from tees further back.  He also does great at hiding the path if it crosses in front of the tee. Big upside in considering the tees, usually just functional elements as artistic elements as well.

Only downsides are some confusion, wider room needed at tees, where we usually squeeze those areas in to save residential land.  Even on core courses, greens and tees on the next hole tend to get spaced out more than some here would like.  Also,  more grading cost, and sometimes, more cart path cost, if tees are staggered left and right of the back tee centerline.

Thomas,

My home course is very flat and existing tees are elevated and rectangular.  We are looking at constructing some new forward tees, some of which will be located within the current fairway cut.  Constructing tees in a similar manner to those existing would look awkward and stand out.  To make these forward tees blend in, we are planning to create small, free form, level plateaus that will be approx. 12" above grade with slopes and tee top cut at same fairway height.

Or you can just put tee markers to one side of the fairway, like the Royal Blue tees at Cabot that play at about 3800 yards - 3000 yards less than the back tees.
