Name That Hole - Cake Edition
« on: July 11, 2017, 10:00:45 AM »
My wife is a better woman than I deserve. Two weeks ago, she started asking me what my favorite golf holes were. It was confusing, given that she hates golf. I mean, she's glad that I play and get the hell out of the house once in a while. And she's quite a fan of one club in her hometown. But it was pretty odd for her to spark a conversation with me about golf, and even weirder when she started looking up pictures of every hole I mentioned.

I told her I loved holes like 5 at Crystal Downs, 13 at The Prairie Club - Dunes, and 8 at Prairie Dunes, but she still wanted more. So then I named a few holes I hadn't played, like 13 at Augusta and 16 at Cypress Point, but she still wasn't satisfied. I mentioned a few other holes, and she told me she had what she needed.

Two days later, I flew to Boston to win a bunch of money in the Blue Hill Member-Guest. I flew home the evening before my birthday, and found this on the kitchen island (the bag, pin, and ball are not to scale):

Name the hole!

Some of y'all have never been called out in bold green font and it really shows.

Why is there rough between the green and the back bunker? Is it attributable to poor maint practices or poor design?

#10 at Pebble Beach

So, technically, I told her 9. But I don't think the cake baker knew which was which. They clearly picked 10 despite a 9 being on the flag.

The rocks are candy, and they are delicious.

I think whenever you talk about Pebble Beach on GCA, the 3x5 card answer to the question "Is it attributable to poor main practices or poor design?" is "Yes."

So obviously the holes that I named originally wouldn't have fit very well on a traditionally-shaped cake, whether round or rectangular or square or whatever. It's hard to imagine 5 at Crystal Downs as a baked good of any kind, and 13 at Augusta would make a better croissant than cake.

What holes would make the best cake holes? 9 and 10 at Pebble both have to be way up there, right? Excellent, fairly straight holes that work nicely on a rectangular cake. 17 at Sawgrass could work in many cake configurations, but it's debatable how great a hole it is. My wife certainly wouldn't have commissioned a cake in its image. What else would work well?

Jason, I initially thought it might be #4 at Pacific Dunes, but not sure either if that would be great enough. Haven't played it ;)

My wife loves golf more than she loves me so the best I can do is pretend that a cupcake with a candle is a Volcano hole.
