Atlanta?
« on: July 07, 2017, 12:18:31 PM »
I am planning on being in Atlanta for a pretty quick day trip next week for a meeting. I did the same last week to Orlando and was lucky to squeeze in a quick nine holes at Winter Park before heading back to the airport. My meeting is on the west side of the metro.

Is anything down there worth checking out? Any cool little 9 holers? Anything worth seeing on the west side in general?

I'm not super familiar with the Atlanta metro golf scene so I appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks

Hey Pat,

I played Wolf Creek near the airport a couple years ago...it was pretty fun, designed by our own Mike Young.

There is also a really old 9-holer in the same area that looked interesting (I haven't played it)...College Park, circa 1929.

I think both are within 10 minutes of the airport.

If you pay a green fee at a Mike Young course I will buy you anything you choose off amazon at equal value.

I'll just have to verify if your address in my Amazon history is current. Funny thing is...Mike never lets anyone pay.

I hope you don't have easy access to my current address. But then again you've proven your ability to search the internet is quite strong.

I'm just going down for a day trip - flying down and back. Would love to see Mike's course, but I don't know right now if I would have time to see it.

Follow up question... how good is the BBQ in Atlanta? Any good BBQ places on the west side or near the airport?

Peachtree - if you can get on.  But I think it is on the other side of town from where you will be.

I'm aerating next Monday-Thursday (greens, tees and fairways) so that would not be much fun at my place.

Not sure about much south and west of Atlanta.

BBQ--Fat Matt's Rib Shack near Five Points is good as well as Pig-n-Chick in Chamblee.  They do their Banana Pudding with Moon Pies instead of vanilla wafers  :D

Sprayberry's just south in my hometown, Newnan, has good Brunswick stew and BBQ.  Fifty years ago we had a great little unirrigated nine hole track, hard as a rock, but over the years it's been turned into just another ho hum overwatered mess.

PC,
Wolf Creek is the closest thing to the airport and is a 5 min uber ride from terminal....if you wiant to play it will let you pay and split the JK amazon deal w me.  College Park has a ways to go.  We have just finished a master plan to take it to 18 holes but presently it is in really bad shape and not worth seeing...if there is time to go downtown can set up Heritage or perhaps Ansley downtown 9.  Just need notice....

I've played Newnan course about 15 years ago, but it was 3 nines...also in the area used to play Whitewater but it was changed to Palmer Course at Starr's Mill (or something like that).

I would think Mac Plumart would be the go-to guy for Atlanta GA courses...

Hi Pat,

Pretty slim pickins' for compelling golf on the west/southwest side of Atlanta.

If you've got connections, Piedmont Driving Club is very close to the airport. A maximal Rees design (just like the rest) with lots of holes built up high over the edge of a lake. It's actually one of his better jobs, IMO.

Browns Mill, a city owned course, is nearby. It's in a "rough" area but I played it quite a bit when I first moved to town. It's a really nice piece of land--I always thought it could be a jewel with a proper renovation. Haven't been back for a while so I can't vouch for conditions, but maybe worth a look.

Eagles Landing, a 27-hole Fazio design is about 25 minutes from the airport south on I-75. A real estate deal but the golf is pretty, and pretty good. Private but accessible.

That's all I can think of right now. Good luck!

I would have, Rees, except I was on a pretty tight schedule and golf was a bit of a spur of the moment thing in the middle of the afternoon on the way back to the airport. I seem to be in Orlando more and more often for work these days. The next time I am down there I will let you know!

Sounds good, I live a couple miles from the course, so I can sometimes make spur of the moment work.

The Vortex, definitely. It also has best selection of beers and whiskies in the city.

It also has very long lines.

As for golf, absent connections at some of the private clubs north of town (trips you don't want to risk anyway given your window), play Mike Y's Wolf Creek. A very good, reasonably-priced course five miles from Hartsfield.

I didn't manage to find time to play golf during my short trip to Atlanta. However, I did enjoy a terrific BBQ lunch at Fox Brothers yesterday and I managed to meet up with Mike Young at a fine establishment near the airport for a quick chat before getting on a plane.  I enjoyed chatting with Mike so much that I lost track of time and almost missed my flight...

Thank you all for the recommendations.
