Anyone fancy Wallasey tonight?
« on: July 19, 2017, 07:36:54 AM »
I'm working on the Wirral this week and have arranged to play Wallasey this evening (Wednesday) with Ken Moodie - a local golf course architect of some repute.

It just struck me that there may be some guys in the area for the Open at Birkdale who might like to join us.

Tee time 17.30 cost £45.

Phone me on 07720 285376 if interested.

Not me. Currently incapacitated but at £45 that sounds like an excellent rate. I've heard about Wallasey and seen some photos but looking forward to receiving the full Cheslett report.

In the end Ken had to bail due to having to get a report finished for a client in Canada.

I phoned the office at Wallasey on the off-chance that I might re-arrange our booking for another day. They couldn't have been more helpful, and Ken and I are booked in for 6th August. The £90 I'd paid online has been carried over.

Well done Wallasey!

As it turned out, a thunderstorm struck the Wirral at around 5.30 so Ken made an excellent call!

Duncan,

I am interested to see that you played Prestatyn and Holywell this year. What did you think of them?

Duncan,

I'm interested that Glasgow Gailes has fallen off your schedule. Was it something that I said ?  ;D

Wallasey is really a load of fun.  There are some bland holes on flattish inland land, but most play brilliantly with massive dunes and some very cool benched in greens.  Don't miss the oil painting in the clubhouse of Bobby Jones painted during the 1930 Grand Slam when Wallasey was a qualifier for the Open at neighboring Hoylake.

The course must have been quite special before the dunes holes were lost and the holes on the flatter inland portion replaced them. I can just see "Ace McBride" relaxing with a single malt in the lounge with the same powder blue sweater that Bobby wore!

I've played Prestatyn several times in the last couple of years. It is our "go to" choice for a day trip to the coast when things are a bit muddy inland. It's a cheap and cheerful links course with an indifferent front nine but a really good back. I might well be tempted by their Second Club membership offer - only £220.00 pa.

Holywell was a real treat - particularly the outstanding back nine over the road from the clubhouse. Really quirky and on terrific turf.

Working on the Wirral this week I found myself staying across the road from Wirral Ladies GC. I invested £12 in a twilight round and was astounded to find a really testing and very interesting heathland course of only 5000 yards. Tremendous fun and an object lesson in what can be achieved if long hitters are left out of the equation. The place was busy with ladies and senior men having a great time.

Niall,

My apologies!  I can't remember deleting Glasgow Gailes from the list. Duly restored!

Duncan,

I am so glad you enjoyed Prestatyn (you never see the see, but the back nine is very characterful) and Holywell (I mean to go back for a look one of these days). Glad also that you liked Wirral Ladies so much. It is excellent.
