Colt's Best Short Par 3's
« on: June 19, 2017, 10:05:51 AM »
I'm searching for some examples of his best short 3's if you guys have photos that would be ideal.

I was trying to think of some the other day and the most prolific shot 3's I could think of were from other architects given Colt often built a small one I'm curious as to your favorites.

Ignoring the obvious one at Royal Troon there can't be many better than this one -
The 8th on the Channel Course at Burnham & Berrow - who says a hole needs bunkers?!

Here are a few other short 'uns to ponder -

7th at Royal County Down (Championship)
Several on the surprisingly fine Annesley course at RCD
7th at Cruden Bay St Olaf course
Several on The Bann course at Castlerock
6th at Perranporth
13th at Brora
8th at Royal Aberdeen
12th at Radyr
6th at Tenby
3rd at Trevose
5th and 10th at Painswick

Perhaps David could clarify?
Seems to me the thread title and OP can be interpreted more than one way.

Thomas,

Thanks for your enthusiasm and posting the photo of what I 100% agree is a very fine short 3. Adam, however, is correct in that I'm really only looking for Colt's Best Short par 3's.

Mike, thanks it's 142 yards and while not long I'm really looking for short. Wedge/gap wedge kind of stuff.

David

the Old Course at Mandelieu is a bit of a hidden gem. Shabby around the edges but it still has the bones of a great Colt course. It is unusual in that it as back to back par 3s twice on the round but such is the quality of these holes and the course as a whole it is not something you really notice.

The 16th hole is 121 meters from the back tee and is a cracking short par 3 colt hole

Hope this is of interest,

Jon

The 5th on the Eden (St Andrews) is pretty sporting and plays 125 from the box, frequently with a helping wind.

The 4th (?) at County Sligo. Can't recall the yardage but it won't be far off what you're looking for. A number of BUDA participants played it last year so hopefully someone will have a photo.

Niall,

Thanks, very nice hole yes however even that one is not really short at 150 yds.

I'm really looking for the very short holes of Colt.

Greg, good call. St. Germaine has some excellent 3's. You may be surprised but the 7th and 11th are both shorter (though only by yds than the 17th)

Which one would you call the best on the course? I personally like the 7th the most. It's 131 yds.

Wow. I am shocked #7 is that short...certainly played longer both times I was there. I am a sucker for  quarry (or quarry-ish) holes so #17 gets my vote. Just do not tell my wife I said that - she made a 1 on #7 her only visit!

David,
One that stands out from the Colt courses I've seen (and that meets your criteria) is 11 at St Georges Hill. 119 yards from the back. A wonderful uphill short hole with an extremely steep bank immediately off the right side of the green. The photo doesn't do justice to how high this really is.

Interestingly I was on Google Maps and measured the hole length as being c.130 yards from the forward tee. I'd take a guess from the approach angle to the green that this might have been the main tee back when Colt designed it. Just a guess. Either way I've made a mental note to remember and play from that tee next time I'm there  ;D

All of which makes me ask the question, if you are looking for short Colt par 3's, is it as he designed them or as they are now ?

I like SGH 11 well enough but by Colt par three standards it's hardly outstanding. Also the green is not original, it was relaid, in the 60s iirc.

Rickmansworth Muni has some good ones...from memory the 5th was the standout at about 115 yds.

You have to smack it up onto a plateau high above the tee and there's a lot going on in the green.

Radyr - 12th - although it might be a touch longer than your looking for David - see this thread for further details.

Also the 4th and particularly the 17th at Clyne - again maybe a touch to longer - http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,64454.msg1536249.html#msg1536249
