What other courses in the U.S.were designed and built with no fairway
bunkers ??

My home course, Glen Echo in St. Louis, was originally designed with no bunkers at all in 1901.  By 1904, when golf was played as part of the Olympics, only 12 bunkers had been added, with two of those cross bunkers. Given the fact that the designers were the Foulis brothers, who learned all their skills from Old Tom, it is entirely possible that they found mounding and green placement sufficient for those early golfers.  Today there are only 44 on the course, and of those, only two holes have fairway bunkers, and they are not original.

I think that there are a lot of links courses that would cope pretty well without bunkers. The most obvious to my mind would be Machrihanish - not that it's got many bunkers at the moment.

Royal Ashdown would, doubtless, charge up the table, and there might also be more than local interest in Berkhamsted, which was described by Walker Cup past-captain, Peter McEvoy, 'I have played competitively at Berkhamsted for nearly 20 years and I can assure you that it is very difficult.  I still cannot put my finger on why but it subtly wears away at your score and, unless one is at the top of one's form, par can become increasingly remote from reality.'  He was twice Amateur Champion, played in 5 Walker Cups and was winning Captain in two.  I respect his judgement! There are other bunkerless courses in Britain, such as Piltdown, but Berkhamsted and Royal Ashdown would make a formidable double-pairing for the next GCA Ryder Cup, following Painswick.....
