Aronimink Greens
« on: June 02, 2017, 04:07:53 PM »
I just had the pleasure of revisiting Joe Bausch's photos of several Philadelphia courses. First of all, the photos are fantastic as many of you know. Second, it is impressive how many terrific courses there are in the area. I walked Philadelphia Cricket when our Assistant Pro made it to the PGA Club Professional Championship there a couple of years ago, but really had no idea of the depth of courses.

But my question: from the photos of Aronimink, it appears that the greens have more serious interior contours than the Ross courses that I have played. Am I misreading the photos or is it just that I have not played enough Ross courses (Broadmoor East and West, PH2, Pine Needles, Hope Valley, Mid Pines, Seaview, and Evanston are my limited list)?

I think the greens at Aronimink are some of Ross' best. There is a lot of movement and slope. It begins on hole number one. Stay below the hole or you will have a five footer coming back. It has been about five years since I played it but have vivid memories of loving the greens.

Here are two recent aerials which show most of the recent modifications.

I played Evanston back in the early 70s. We were Park District golf course kids, but used to sneak onto Evanston to get a taste of what was then the forbidden.

I just played in the 2-Day M/M at Aronimink. The restored/enlarged greens offer some great new pin positions. Grow in throughout the course almost 100% complete. Those aerials show a lot of the runway tee boxes, which will go back to freeform later this year.

What was very interesting and to Ira's point about internal green contours was that those greens played very difficult for the tour players during the AT&T.

The tour actually slowed the speed down for the tournament compared to what the members played. This allowed them to place the hole locations in some very difficult spots, which the members have rarely seen.

Darn, I was really hoping that awful elevated pond on 17 would be gone.
