northern New Jersey golf course/club suggestions
« on: May 24, 2017, 06:39:47 AM »
Northern NJ is on my radar for this summer. I have scoured threads, google-mapped my evenings away, and now reach out to you.

Any suggestions on neat public courses or private from Trenton/I-195 north are appreciated. I'm aware of Hamilton Farms, Forsgate, Somerset, Plainfield, Springdale on the private side. Thanks in advance for your contributions.

Note to trolls: This thread is not an attempt at currying favor/gaining access. This thread is not an attempt at squeezing invitations from GCA stalwarts.
Coming in 2024
~Elmira Country Club
~Soaring Eagles
~Bonavista
~Indian Hills
~Maybe some more!!

Hoboken? Don't know of any courses in Hoboken city limits or named "Hoboken".

Neshanic Valley & Ballyowen are very good rock solid public offerings that will not disappoint.

There is a lot of great golf in this area (my neck of the woods). The issue, as you allude to, is access.

In terms of public courses, John nailed the two nicest ones. My guess is the person who said Hoboken meant the Skyway Golf Course in Jersey City (there is a previous thread or two on this one).

Galloping Hill is also worth throwing out there. True muni-golf in Jersey but it has become quite the facility. Also right off the Garden State Parkway so easy to get to. NJSGA has moved their headquarters there and the course has gotten a lot of love over the last few years. State Open was held there this past summer.

A fun, inexpensive public option is Harker's Hollow, a 1929 Robert White design. There's some good stuff there. Here's the Bausch Collection photo album for the course: http://www.myphillygolf.com/uploads/bausch/HarkersHollow/index.html

Also, closer to the shore, near Asbury Park, Deal and Hollywood are a good one-two punch. For what it's worth, Deal may have the best hot dogs anywhere.

The Architects Golf Club in Phillipsburg is a good public course with a theme that fits this group nicely. Stephen Kay and Ron Whitten designed it.

I'll second Hackensack. They've made some good changes there recently and have a really charming couple of templates. The biarritz third hole is gigantic, but a lot of fun to play (as you'll find yourself running balls up to a back flag location) and the punchbowl sixteenth is a neat driving hole with a great green complex.

Bill-If you read my post I listed courses specifically in Essex and Bergen counties. Plainfield is in Union County. Ask for a Rand McNally map of New Jersey for Father's Day. ;)

YES!!!!  Dave McNally.  Childhood hero of mine.  He was from my hometown...Billings, MT.  The only pitcher to hit a grand slam in a world series game 1970.
