Another Trinity Forest article
« on: May 22, 2017, 12:23:29 PM »
I played golf and had dinner with Curt Sampson a few years ago.  I think he shot 79 or 80 playing with a hickory set at Wolfdancer in the Austin area.  Interesting dude.  I wasn't aware he was doing some looping at Trinity Forest.  I recently played the course for the first time, and I think Mr. Sampson does a pretty good job encapsulating the experience of playing TF in this article.

The course is still a bit rough around the edges and not yet ready for it's close up, but it is worth seeing.  It is playing so firm right now, it's almost a bit over the top.  It's going to be a love or hate course for most people.  I lean much more to the love side.

I've not seen the course yet, but it's an excellent article.

One of the things that allowed the golf course to be different is that the developers were very clear that they did NOT intend to let the PGA TOUR have any input on the design of the course.  There were a couple of Tour players involved with the developer, and they were the most vocal guys about that point.  They didn't want another TPC, and they wanted the architects to have freedom from meddling.

I know this because I asked the question regarding my own proposal.

One typical TPC out...How many left to go?
The previous course was unwatchable, which made Monday morning commentary for me...err challenging

Trinity Forest answers a lot of questions for me:
1. What would a seasoned and successful design team produce if they were given as close to carte blanche as possible in this developer/client-driven era?
2. How would architects who've long been designing for the retail & resort golfer go about challenging the best golfers in the world and creating a major championship test?
3. Is Ben Crenshaw still beloved in Texas, and is Jordan Speith even more beloved?
4. Where does the smarter money (the rich) go when the smart money (the merely well-to-do) have crowded out the suburbs?
5. Could C&C have built the Olympic course in Brazil?

Peter:

I don't see how this article addresses your first or last questions.

1.  The design brief for Trinity Forest was to build a course that could host a Tour event, the SMU golf team, and guests of the corporate members.  That's pretty specific.  And the site is on top of a landfill that's capped and could not be cut into for environmental reasons, so it's hardly a "blank slate" site.  There were a lot of givens, as there usually are.

5.  Anybody could have built the Olympic course in Brazil.  The only question was how good it was going to be, and I'm not sure Trinity Forest answers that question.  For sure, there were a lot more parties at the table -- in fact, so many that Bill and Ben did not even make a proposal to the Rio 2016 organizing committee.

As the pictures show, this is really a rural property. The rough areas of south .Dallas are not far away, but you are really just up out of the river floodplain. The logistics will be interesting.
