Photo Tour: Country Club of Troy (Full 18) New
« on: May 13, 2017, 06:01:38 PM »
Country Club of Troy is awesome. The greens are awesome, the routing is awesome, the course is awesome, and I have not had more fun playing golf in this part of the world that I can think of other than Eastward Ho!, which is one of my all time favourites.

Troy moves up and down like very few courses. The greens are also as vexing as any I've seen. I love Travis and Troy has deepened my love for Travis courses even further.

We played with a CC of Troy member on Thursday and he just transferred down to NYC, and he is now playing Skyway:

While I threw up a little in my mouth from the mowing lines (get rid of the damn rollers) I always enjoy photographs of CC of Troy, a golf course that's "just about right" in my book.  I'll try to add a few copies of the first green - it is fabulous in its simplicity but doesn't show well in photographs.    When I first saw the Trinity Forest greens in Bill Shulz thread I immediately thought of Troy's 1st green.  Give me a pasture and 9 greens like the 1st and I'm good to go.

Kindest regards,

Mike

Pictures tend to flatten out the course but you can sure see the movement here!  Looks awesome, and is one I've had on the list to see for a while.

Thanks for sharing.

Anytime, Mark. Thanks for the comments.

It's hard to capture the undulations and elevation changes of the course taking pictures while playing. But the property is really something.

CC of Troy is a very cool course.  The first green as has been noted can make a fool of many a skilled golfer.  The pro told me they have had very little changes to the course, likely due to the fact the membership has not had solid stability for as long as he could remember, and thus little extra money to muck it up!!

My only knock would be the feeling later in the round that you have been and continue to feel like you are hitting a lot of shots to a very elevated green and thus almost blind.

Otherwise it is a very cool track that is very under the radar.

I like the three hole stretch of 7,8,9 which after some pretty big elevation changes on the opening half dozen holes flattens out on a meandering par five of 550 yards to a cool greensite with more going on than initially meets the eye. Eight is a par three of 190 yards that has two bunkers somewhat hidden to a green that tilts back to front. The hole is framed beautifully with native grass directly in front and flanking. Finally the awesome 9th which is a 425 yard par 4 with an up an over blind skyline tee shot with a downhill approach that can be flown or bounced in to another devilish Travis green. The Travis green's are always a standout and a lesser talent would have had much difficulty on such an extreme site as Troy.

A half and half mowing pattern on the fairways would do wonders for the visuals of the classic routing movement.

What are the tee yardages?

I love the way the 3rd green is placed on the land and the way the bunkers nestle into the slope.

Is 4 a par 5?  Curious about the landing zones (photo has a group before the hill).  The movement in the fairway before the crest of the hill and the apparent blind second shot to an opposite sloped fairway is fun looking.

What is the distance of 9?  Is it a driver over the hill and a flip wedge into the green?

Love the green site for the 11th.  Look at all the fairway width too!

Great shots. Thanks.

Kevin-
The third @ Troy is a par 4 and it's fairly short, like a drive and a very short iron. Very cool hole. I believe the ninth plays around 425 but it is usually into the prevailing westerly breeze. For me (i drive it about 240) it's a drive and a 7 iron or so with the approach shot straight downhill and difficult to judge....very cool green as well.
Number 11 is a great and somewhat shortish teaser par 5. You can go for the green in two but missing on the short side is something I wouldn't recommend. It's another really good hole in a course full of them.
I grew up in suburban Albany, NY and have played Troy countless times and it's a course that I have always enjoyed playing. I have to tell you though that if you polled 100 golfers in the area a great majority would tell you it's their "least favorite" course. I kid you not.
The bottom line: If you like and appreciate GCA you will love it but if you don't you will think it's "too hilly, too many blind shots, crazy greens, etc..."

As long-time officer of the Travis Society, I'm enjoying this thread immensely.  CC of Troy is in the top 5 of the 22 Travis courses I have played, and it's great seeing it get some love on this site.  I think that the course has benefited greatly from the great respect for its history and classic features from some key members and the superintendent.  They brought in Bruce Hepner to do their bunker work in 2007.

The course holds a special place in the golf course design life of Travis.  It was the last course construction site he examined just a few weeks before his death on July 31, 1927.  He was very ill, and advised the contractor, J.S. Merrill, to have one of his men drive him from hole to hole.

I'm a sucker for the short par 3 and that 2nd hole is something else. Spent a lot of time there the fall day I played as the course was empty.

Thanks for sharing. Now imagine the undulating property and Travis genius with the white pines and spruce trees gone ......as a start.  Better turf and better views.....all the best.

Don't know anything about this place, but to me:

1. I love the movement in the fairways
2. It just LOOKS like it would be a ton of fun to play.

JP, that is not the easiest question for me.  My top 5 changes from time to time, but of the courses that I most look forward to going back to, Cape Arundel is always there.  For me, just a very fun course to play, with some of the most intriguing greens, that seem to just reflect the ground they're set on; I wish I had played Westchester West on a better day, but still, I was left with memories of a course set on very interesting terrain, with a routing that emphasized the individual character of each hole, beautifully located green sites; Hollywood GC, one of Travis's redesigns, is always one of my top choices.  Again, it's the greens that stand out, in my mind.  I look forward to seeing it after the Brian Schneider bunker restoration; CC of Troy, as I mentioned earlier;  CC of Scranton always impressed me with the routing and Travis greens with very challenging internal contours.  That's five, and I've left out some favorites to play, i.e. Yahnundasis GC and Lookout Point CC.  Their place in my "official" ranking suffers from significant modifications to the original Travis design.  Still, they're terrific golf courses.  Yahnundasis has some of my favorite Travis greens.  And, then there is Cherry Hill Club, a course built on uninteresting terrain, but with a routing and greens that permits each hole to stand out.  Lastly, I love my home course, Stafford CC.  The Travis routing remains essentially the same, though the 8th hole was changed from a short par 4 to a medium length par 3.  Unfortunately, many of the greens were softened drastically, a couple rebuilt, and the infamous Travis chocolate drop hazards were wiped out.  But, I believe that the back nine is one of best nines I've played with a beautiful, natural flow to it.  I'm hoping to play North Jersey CC again, soon.  I think it is a vastly underappreciated golf course.  If you ask me that question tomorrow, I'll probably have a slightly different response!?
