Back to County Donegal
« on: May 19, 2017, 09:43:09 PM »
I am heading tomorrow back to Ireland.  This will be my eleventh trip there.  I mostly spend my time in County Donegal and have a rental house for a three week stay.

I will head from Ireland up to the Fasterbo area of Sweden in the second half of June.   I appreciate the input I got from GCAers for the Sweden trip.

I thought I would mention being in the Donegal area in the event any GCAers would like to meet up for a game.

Are you going to explore any new courses and take some regional day-trips this year?

You should consider Strandhill in County Sligo if you can make it there and back in a day.  (I assume you wouldn't want to book a hotel given that you already have a rental in Donegal.)

I am playing Rosses Point late Monday and Murvagh Tuesday afternoon.

I will probably get in a round at Portstewart.  During the Causeway Coast Amateur, I will probably spend a couple of nights away, maybe playing Rosapenna where I have a one round credit and Nairn and Portnoo, which I have never played before. I might venture down to Strandhill then or maybe stop by on my way back to Dublin.

Hope to play Portmarnock in Dublin.  if that doesn't work, I will see about The European Club, which I really enjoy.

Of course, I will get in a lot of play at Ballyliffin and see friends there.

You have to get over to Cruit Island - fantastic 9 holes on the sea

If you can't work in Portmarnock, The Island is quite the equal, IMHO.  Narin and Portnoo is a hoot.  So happy I worked those two into the itinerary last year.  I think you told me you already did Cruit, but it is on the way...  ;) ;D

Others may disagree, but I thought Ardglass in Down Patrick was the relatively unknown hidden gem of my trip.  Nothing too challenging, but good holes and amazing setting.  The club house is the oldest clubhouse in world- an old castle.

I tried to find Cruit Island once and could not find it.

Like The Island Club but it has gotten pricey.

Am on Icelandaur flight from Seatlle to Reykjavik.  Has wifi.  Nice flight - six and a half hours.  Delayed connection in Reykjavik to Glasgow.  Some Royal Dornoch members from Tacoma are 8n flight.   I will fly on Ryanair to Dublin.   Not fond of Heathrow.  BA failed to get one or both checked bags on connecting flights three of four times.  I will fly in four weeks to Copenhagen on Ryanair and stay in the Fasterbo area for 10 days.  then fly Icelanair to Reykjavik for three nights.

Glad to be traveling again.

If you are playing Portnoo, Cruit can't be much more than 1/2 hr up N56 to Dungloe and a nice ride from there onto the Island.  Could easily play both in a day.  Although it seems like one of those can't get there from here road systems from Ballyliffin.

I am an old guy and everyone told us we have to go over to Cruit after Nairn Portnoo and Cruit was so good that I forgot how tired I was. We paid 15 Euros late in the day and in the US it would have been ten times that.

Just bumped the Strandhill Photo Tour for Chuck to see.
