Bunker 17 TPC make Sunday hole easier?
« on: May 14, 2017, 05:59:23 PM »
I think that the bunker gives you an aiming point thus easing the approach to a back right hole. No bunker would make the hole harder in my view.

Sure, but does the hole need to be harder?

Mike,

Does your opinion change if that real estate occupying the bunker was water instead? I agree with your visual premise.

For these guys it doesn't really matter I think.

They all knew:
1) yardage to carry to the island
2) yardage to carry the bunker
3) yardage to the water behind.

I think they will use that information far more than what their eye will tell them.

Bunker adds a small amount of quiik as a ball that lands on its shoulder could do anything.

Disagree to some degree.
A bunker aids greatly in depth perception.
A player is greatly aided by visuals, now matter how "by the numbers" he is.
Especially in between yardages (which most are) and in windy conditions.
The eyes and brain are greatly underrated as incredible tools for distance control-and can aso be fooled by clever visual architecture (bunker well in front of green)
