It's been a couple of years since I made it out to San Francisco and had the good fortune of visiting The Cal Club. Nearly everyday I think back to that morning. What an amazing place to play the game.

If someone said I could pick one membership to any club in the U.S., this is the club I'd pick. I haven't played every golf course but I know I would never grow tired of roaming these fairways. I love everything about the club right down to the welcoming atmosphere. I was nervous pulling into the driveway, but that quickly dissipated upon meeting my playing partners and all those at the club.

BTW, if anyone can tell me why the pictures come out lower res when posted here, that would be great.

Enjoy.

Frank,

Thanks very much for posting these pictures. I played Cal Club many years ago (1989) and really liked it then. But, wow, today's version is fantastic.

Thanks Tim! I try my best to get as many photos as possible while playing. It really is an amazing place.

That is the best I have ever seen a course look in a compilation of half ass photos.

That's interesting because it was the best I've ever played while playing half ass golf.

Looks and plays better than SF Golf Club in my opinion.  That 12th is my favorite.

It was replanted with fine fescue/ colonial bentgrass.  Maybe some other clubs out there should follow suit.

Played it twice with an incredibly magnanimous host. It's all that and a bag of chips. Tough to beat Cal Club for the complete golf experience.

No one would bat an eyelid if Cal Club and San Francisco Golf Club swapped places in the world top 100.

Thanks for posting this! Looks phenomenal. That 17th tee shot over the 16th green is interesting, except I suspect the course is rarely busy enough for it to cause any concern.

In a perfect world perhaps the bunkers would not be quite so frilly - or perhaps that's just a perception from the tufty grass they leave. But that is just being pedantic - otherwise it does have some lovely movement.

Many thanks for the photo tour. It brings back some great memories from my California golf trip last year when I was lucky enough to have a game at the Cal Club. A fantastic course with a fantastic set up. I also totally agree about the hospitality which was out of this world. A true members club.

Thanks for posting these photos.  What a fantastic looking place.  Am I correct in saying this is a walking only course?  Is the walk very demanding?

You would be correct Jim, it is primarily a walking course. The walk itself is not the easiest, but it's also not the toughest. I found it very fair and quite enjoyable.

Fantastic shots. What's the club on the little drop shot 16th? Would it be a full wedge?

If I recall correctly, from the "back" tees, which are really one set up from the tips, it played about 120 to the middle.

Jim T. -

Echoing what Frank M said, the course is no problem at all to walk, at least compared to most SF Bay Area courses. The green to tee walks are quite short. The club does have a group of caddies, but I don't think they are mandatory.

Wonderful place to play golf. Looking fwd to going back for a third visit.

On our first visit we came down the last with the Australian flag flying next to the Stars and Stripes, absolute touch of class from our host

I had a similar experience with the Saltire flying.Probably the biggest Saltire I've ever seen. Our host didn't point it out (he didn't have to !) which I thought was a nice touch. Overall a tremendous reception but it's the quality of the course that remains foremost in the memory.

I'd second that!
