The swamps to the northeast of Buffalo proper were claimed in the early 1960s by SUNY (State University of New York) for its flagship campus, SUNY-Buffalo. Adjacent to that property is the town of Amherst's Audubon golf course. A stellar (irony) William Harries layout, Audubon is best known for its 1970s experiment with 36 cut holes a day over 18 greens. Each foursome would place the flag in the other cup, and proceed ahead. In the mid 1980s, a Scott Witter green was built on the 8th/17th (they reverse the 9s so often, I cannot keep this hole situated) hole, as part of a flood-control project.
What is not commonly known, is the original plan for the course. 36 holes as part of a larger development. Here is Kevin Lynch's research, as hastily compiled by me.
