OT- Your Buddy Up Experiences
« on: April 19, 2017, 07:13:14 PM »
I had a wonderful Buddy Up experience yesterday.  I went out at 4pm to play UM.  Went to the starter with my ticket and there was a college age kid by the putting green that was going to go off the back because it was completely open.  I asked him if he would mind if I joined him, he took me up on my offer.  He had enclosed golf bag with 4 clubs in it.  Calvin was from Taiwan and attending UM for his masters in Engineering.  This was his 2nd time ever walking a Golf course, Cartballing mandatory in Taiwan.  I asked him how he got into golf, expecting some foreign ''Grow the Game initiative'' exposed on here  ::) .  Calvin said that he played a few times as a kid with his Uncle.  He took it back up later in life for he was looking for other sports where his lack of height wouldn't put him at a disadvantage.  It was such a joy to hear his knowledge of many subjects.  It so happens he is a great Tennis player.  Unfortunately he has less then a week left before heading home for summer.  We played Tennis today, haven't touched a racquet in a few years.  Pickleball is throwing off my hand eye coordination.   I've been looking for a Tennis buddy for a few years to help with my beer gut.  He won 6-0, 6-0.  Some of the best Buddy Up experience happen during twilight golf.  Buddy Up is real, what is your story?

I had a fling with a girl I paired up with for the first time when she caught up to me and a coworker who didn't know the difference between a shank and a common mishit on the 12th at University Ridge. Thankfully play always starts on the back nine there. Ol' Buddy left after nine. She was Korean. Thanks Se Ri.

I once played Odana Hills and was paired with a random douche. He hit a terrible tee shot on 17. He reteed, swung, and started yelling "God no!" immediately. I immediately saw why. A few seconds later, his Mulligan bounced, rolled, and dropped for a par. I laughed my ass off while he threw his club and cussed that he had never made a hole-in-one and probably never would. Couldn't have happened to a nicer douche.

I got paired up with another kid who was attending the same college as me. Turned out we had a lot in common and by the back 9 we had exchanged numbers to play again soon. We played a lot of golf together, hung out more, and a couple years later we were close enough that he had me as a groomsman (along with his brothers) at his wedding. One of the best people I've ever met and a great friend I hope to have for the rest of my life.

July 3, 2002. It was pouring rain when I entered the pro shop at Western Gailes. The green fee was 85 GBP and apparently non negotiable. I took a pass and returned to Turnberry for practice. The weather improved and I decided to go off the Ailsa. As I was about to tee off #1 with no groups or people in sight, the starter paired me up. The last thing I wanted on my annual golf holiday was to be paired with an American, which he was. We got along and played again the next day at the Ailsa and the next day at Prestwick. Since that trip we've become close friends and best golf partners, having shared several games on subsequent trips to Scotland and New York.

My best was probably at NGLA.  I was there playing with a group of six other friends.  They were in the pro shop buying it out of merchandise!!  I struck up a conversation with the only other person in the shop.  He was a very interesting man and was very knowledgeable about all things golf.

I invited him to join us for lunch, because he was not set up for the "best lunch in golf" and we were only seven.  Long story short, he was supposed to be on a trip with his son, but his son was not able to join.  We invited him to play Shinnecock the next morning and then fly to Fisher's Island for an afternoon round.  Since it was so late, we had to take a boat back to CT in order to meet our plane back to Long Island and then to dinner.  A FULL day and he never complained once, even when we got no lunch between rounds.  He even changed his travel departure time to stay and play with us.

What a wonderful new friend and I am actually going to visit him this weekend in Florida.  This only happens with golfers!!!!!

You got him in the NGLA clubhouse, you took him to Shinnecock, flew him to Fishers......
and you were worried he might complain?

Not long lasting relationships, but interesting experiences when I decided to take up golf in my early 50s.  I'd go to a nearby municipal course and get paired up with people.  On two occasions they turned out to be former "pros," mini-tour non-success stories, who'd played college golf.  The first was now a long haul truck driver whose tractor/cab I'd seen in the parking lot.  He said he was from Ohio and tried to get in a round when he could.  Very nice guy and you could see the skill level, but rusty.

The other time it was a local (Charlotte) guy with two other friends.  He'd played high school golf in Charlotte and then at a small college in Texas, whose name I cannot recall, and then on a mini-tour without success -- he was now driving a delivery truck for UPS.  He was still a really good player, maybe shot just one or two over par that day, but he was trying to introduce one of the friends, a raw beginner, to the game, and could not have done a worse job.  He'd give the guy (a fellow UPS worker), who was trying hard, a pointer, and then berate him meanly when he failed, which was just about every shot.  This was not a pleasant experience for me.

About 15 years ago my wife ad work in SD -- her company rented out the Hilton @ Torrey Pines.  So I said "Im coming with you."

I played both Torrey Courses, then played some inland SD course (54 that day) and met an older gentleman who I hit it off with (I'd have been about 26 or 27 at the time).

He asked where I was playing the next day and I said I was driving about 75 minutes to the The SCGA Members Club, an old RTJ Course.

He said "I haven't played there in years, but I love it --- I'm coming with you!".

Turns out this gentleman had been Cary Middlecoff's accountant for many years and he had some great stories, I particularly enjoyed the time Dr. Middlecoff called him and said "What are you doing Monday ... would you like to join me at Cypress Point?"

Never talked to him again, but thoroughly enjoyed two days of golf with him.

My buddy, Calvin came back from Taiwan this fall and was so kind to bring me some fancy Taiwan tea and packaged cookie/figs.  Buddy Up keeps on giving and its a wonderful thing.  Have you ventured out of your click to experience it?

I was playing Talking Stick in Scottsdale about 10 years ago with my Uncle. They we getting ready to send us off as a two-ball when the starter escorted a very muscular African-American from the range to the first tee and asked, "Do you mind going off with a single?" This large man, with a stylized "A" as his belt buckle, stuck out his massive right forearm and said, "Hi, I'm Bo."

So I played 18 holes with the greatest two sport athlete of all time. And he couldn't have been a sweeter guy - helped me look for my wayward shots, smiled often and even talked a little smack. The subject of his playing career didn't even come up until the 17th hole when I just couldn't hold it in anymore and the dam broke. He handled all of my predictable questions with patience and grace. Been a big fan ever since.

This thread continues to spread joy and especially as the holiday season is upon us. I played with a friend yesterday at Shennecossett in Groton, CT which is always a treat. The tee sheet was pretty full and a gentleman jumped in to play with us. He was a local guy who had a membership and just showed up hoping to get out. After the obligatory intros and what have you it was revealed that his livelihood is pianos. His services include lessons, fine tuning, minor and major repair and complete rebuilding of pianos. Certainly a niche and one that comes with meeting a lot of musicians over the years. He had some great stories about events, venues and primarily jazz musicians. He walked with us, played fast, and was as nice and unassuming as anyone I can recall being paired with. We are supposed to play again soon. I'm down with the Buddy Up!!!!!

On the day I played Pinehurst #2 on Christmas week about 10 years ago, I was unexpectedly paired with fellow GCA-er Jeff Loh.

We had a terrific time and with very few exceptions, almost every other single person I've ever played golf with from this DG has been a very enjoyable time.

The good news is I can count the reprobates on one hand.

I've even had a great time with Mucci on multiple occasions.    ;D
