at losing a ball.

Can we add the condition: "Not including the first-No. 1 hole on any course"? Otherwise it's too easy, even for the likes of me, and tells us nothing. Has there ever been an architect fool enough to make the No 1 hole the best on the course...err, I mean the hardest?

4th hole at Shennecossett - Par 3, 208 yard uphill Volcano hole.

Very tough interior hole, very underrated. See bottom left corner coming up from the bottom:

ANGC #3, #6, #7, #9, #14, #17.  Obviously not the best holes at Augusta, but every other hole has water or underbrush if I recall correctly.

Ron,

I didn't even mention the balls that are hit thin and go OB long. Funny thing about the 18th at St. Andrews is that the members tees play longer than the tournament ones. They move the tee left for the tourists to protect the cars parked along side the road.

Is there a great hole at Pebble, Pine Valley or Cypress that fits the bill?

Cypress Point #9 and 13
Pebble, no
Pine Valley #2, 3, 7, 8, 10, 13- their caddies find everything whether you want it or not

Also every hole at Pinehurst #2, Royal Melbourne, Sand Hills, and Ballyneal

I was going to suggest a number of golf holes from Crystal Downs - but then I remembered that a certain then-18 handicapper I know *didn't* stand a chance there, even though he/she played with the same golf ball for all 18 holes! It took, I'm told, said then-18 handicapper the entire round before he/she realized that hitting a green in regulation wasn't necessarily a *victory*; instead, it often proved to be a mocking prelude to ignoble defeat!

I don't have an answer to the OP, but Mike Sweeney that is a very cool old aerial of Shennecossett, a course I've never heard of - if the current course resembles that aerial it seems worthy of a visit!  Oh, and 18 at TOC may be 400 yards wide, but thank God the wall was there to bounce my sissy slice back into play, enabling an unlikely birdie on my only trip to St. Andrews!

I have a friend who is an 18 and could lose a bowling ball.

Oh, we know the course. We just can't play it. Hard to believe there is a single hole on that island not with a water hazard, let alone a great one.

I think you guys thought I meant great holes on top 100 courses. Sorry, I wanted to hear about which of the best 100 holes in the world which don't even sniff a lost ball. Best I can come up with meeting both criteria is the 10th at Riveria. One of the top 100 holes in the world where you just may wear a ball out before you lose it.

I only have a list of the top 100 holes that I personally have played. T h a t  i s  w h y  I  p o s e d  t h e  q u e s t i o n. I'm searching for why people hate losing balls on holes that they love.

AZ Biltmore GC - Adobe, #2, 15, 16, 17.  Two of them are par 3's in the middle of the property with no trouble anywhere around them. The other two are par 4 in the middle of the property where, to lose a ball, you would have to hit the ball 90* from the fairway with a driver to even come close to trouble.

Dave,

Were you around when the Emperor did some bunker work at the Biltmore?  I need to get out there.

This is a good place to introduce some of those courses played on grazed land.... or a machair landscape.

For instance you can't really lose a ball at Mulranny on many of the holes, some of which are superb. I'm sure there are better examples though.
