Savannah Country Club

Does anyone know of a profile of history of the course?  I have seen several references to it in literature about Bobby Jones and the gold circuit of the 30s and 40s.  I am going down to Savannah for Spring Break with the family and was gonna hunt around for a chance to play it.

I think you may be referring to Savannah GOLF Club.  It is very, very old and very private. Lot of fun if you can get access. It has had a couple of renovations since the last time I played it.

I played there a few years ago. I would recommend having your your head pro call down there. It was a fantastic experience. About a mile from downtown Savannah. The place is oozing with southern charm and history. If I remember correctly, the club claims to be the oldest golf club in the country. There is a newspaper article from the early 1800's talking about a match of guys golfing although I think the first course was at a different site from the current course. Regardless, Savanah Golf Club is very cool...course layout, shot strategy and difficulty make it a real southern treat. Good luck.

While there were reports of a golf club in Savannah dating back to 1795, the Savannah GC that is now in existence was founded in 1899.  The first 9 hole course was put in by S. W. Stewart, was extended to 18 holes some time between 1910 and 1916, and around 1912 they reverted back to sand greens after an experiment with grass.

Ross came in around 1927 to remodel the course.  I don't have many details on exactly what he did, but I'd guess it included lengthening and rerouting much of the course.

The most interesting aspect of the site is that the course winds around some old Confederate ramparts.

I think any "Ross" there is mainly one of those ODG BS tales where he came for a day and whizzed on a tree while pointing.  ....I've been going there for 30 years and don't see it...JMO

Thanks.  Part of the GCA interest is in seeing how this course has held up so well to scoring, despite not being very long at 6481 yards.  The Georgia Amateur was played there in 2005.  Might be one of the shortest courses in the country to host a state amateur event in the last 20 years,
