Hanse Short Course @ Pinehurst

The link has a couple videos, looks like it will be a nice addition.

From the site:
Gil Hanse took a moment after hopping off his bulldozer to give us a sneak peek at the 3rd hole of the new Pinehurst Short Course, which is scheduled to open in early October.

Hanse took us through a few of the fun architectural aspects of the hole, which features an uphill tee shot – that, Hanse said, could be played with a wedge or a putter – and into a punchbowl green for an interesting twist on Donald Ross’ famed turtleback greens.

There’s a dramatic bunker fronting the green, and the view is spectacular. Also, Hanse reveals that he’s built a level area behind the green where he hopes galleries will form and root for aces.

For a fuller look at how the Short Course is coming together, watch below:

Thanks!  Very excited to visit and see this, the touch ups on the No 3 course, and  I cannot wait for his redo of the No 4 course!

Pinehurst is such an interesting study in style changes of the each decade, and they seem not just to be going back to a retro look, but reverting back to what region and land offer.  A more timeless approach.

I was curious as to what the pricing would be.  $50 is actually quite a bit of money for less than 900 yards of golf where you never really hit a full shot.  However, allowing kids to play for free when with an adult is a great deal.

Do kids get to play on their own?

My favorite part of the Children's course at North Betwick is that adults can only play if accompanied by a child.  Come to think of it, some enterprising young Scot could make a few bucks offering to host visitors there :)

I hope to have the time to check this out when I'm in the area mid-late October for the Newport Cup.

HReifs -

Thanks for the link. It is nice to know quality golf projects like The Cradle are being well received. Hopefully it will encourage the building of more such courses/facilities.

I can certainly foresee a shift towards 9 hole courses for the masses, due to time commitments in life, short attention spans of millennials, and difficulty of standard courses.  With the craze of TopGolf, which packages golf in with more standard casual pursuits of mixed company, food, drinking and having a good time I can see some 9 hole courses (perhaps lighted) becoming a new phenomenon as an alternative to standard courses.  Jack Nicklaus and others have long thought they could see a time in the future where 18 holes is just too big of a time commitment, and that was before smartphones etc.

Take the place of 18 hole courses?  No not at all, however expose non or new golfers to the game in a potentially new way I can see happening.  Maybe some type of lighted 9 hole course at a top golf.

Aside from that crazy idea, 9 hole courses are great for young golfers and building first tee programs around them are a good idea with a nice range.  It is how many of us probably learned the game yes?  I remember playing a 3 hole youth course when I was young carved out of a driving range. Thus, I appreciate these courses (some of which are private) constructing a 9 hole course along with their standard courses.

Jeff,

While I agree this is true about 9 hole courses in general, I don't think this is the case for resorts like Pinehurst or Bandon.

Seems the demographic they are after is the hardcore group who dont' have time for another round, but want to get in a little more action and drink beer before the sun goes down.

Agreed. Destination resorts certainly have it for a novelty as you mentioned.
