golf with her majesty?
« on: August 29, 2004, 05:14:55 PM »
i had the unusual pleasure today of playing nine holes at the "Royal Household Golf Club" in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Could this be a GCA first? i don't think the course will win two many architecture awards, but it is undeniably fun to be playing somewhere where it is just possible that the lady with the scarf walking the corgies alongside the ninth is her majesty. and it is also fun to tee off (the 4th) 10 yards away from the castle wall.

the condition of the course would suggest that prince andrew has been playing his golf elsewhere. aside from the unusual location, the course's  great glory is some fantastic trees. if i go back i will try to take some pictures and post them.

Phillip,
Sounds interesting, as well as I'm sure Matt Ward would love to get the slope and yardage from the tips, as well as contact information on how to get on there. ;)

Pictures would be really neat!

A real coup.  It doesn't matter what the course is like.  You've achieved what the rest of us never will.  I'd still like to know what it's like - I very occasionally fly over it.

There is also a 9 holer on the grounds of Balmoral Castle on Royal Deeside .

As with Windsor , private for the use of the Royal family and the Royal Household , although there has been talk lately of being able to get on , if you write a polite letter .

Wasn't McBeth "thane of Cawdor?"  Heady stuff, Mr. Huntley!

Philip-

Even when you are not traveling to the far flung reaches of the GB&I for golf, you still manage to turn up something unique within the 'home counties.' My respect and admiration for your efforts continues to grow.

You say you played 9 holes. Is the course a Windsor a full 18 or is it just 9?

david - it is a 9 holer, but the second set of tees are in some cases very different from the first, so i think it is probably less repetitive than some other 9 holers that you play twice ( i only played nine holes). one thing you notice is that the course is right on the heathrow flight path. you must hope that they have double-glazing in the palace!

Spotted this one in today's Hootsmon. Worth 50 quid a head to see it? Built in 1925 apparently, so who was the Archie?
Had a quick look on Google Earth and it looks VERY rudimentary, but that might be part of its charm!

Anyone have more info?

I'm supposed to be playing it this year so you've just reminded me to chase my pal who was supposed to be organising. From what I understand it's been semi-open to the public for a wee while.

I haven't played golf there but I have played cricket a number of times - you could only see a couple of holes from the pitch and I think that we saw Prince Andrew teeing off. A nice place to play sport.

Driven by many a time. Holes on both sides of a public road and playing across the road as well. See - https://www.instantstreetview.com/@57.034234,-3.215158,74.55h,-4.29p,2.41z

When I was caddying there, Andy used to pitch up regularly at Kingsbarns when he was Captain of the R&A. The one time I was even remotely interested was when his fourball was composed of him, Finchem, Bonallack - and some relatively unknown pro by the name of Arnold Palmer!

Be careful taking pictures. If it is anything like DC security they are not going be comfortable with it. I once took an innocent photo of the Presidents motorcade about to leave the south lawn of the White House. Bad idea.

As an American Anglophile, I was most embarrassed while walking up the curving road from Etonian to Windsor, to spy first a Burger King and then a KFC in the long line of shops on the right side.  WTF I muttered to my good wife.  That was back in 1989, I'm sure other American chains have been added.

Sadly the course closes to outsiders when HM is in residence, when only members can play. You'd be surprised how many people are entitled to play there. The Royal Household Golf Club also plays a full fixture list of matches against the "usual suspects".
