Green Corner Deflection Mounds
« on: February 07, 2017, 11:19:28 AM »
The 3rd at Lulu CC has small knobs on the two front corners of a relatively squared green.   The inside slopes are maintained as green and turn low running shots (the hole plays 430 yards - long for us mortals) toward the center of the green.  Conversely, the outside slopes deflect those shots away from the putting surface.   Simple,  endearing elements.

Have you seen this feature used elsewhere?

Bogey,

We have a green with one knob on the right side at Broadmoor CC (also a Ross).  It does as you say, it also makes recovery shots difficult if it's between your ball and the hole.  Fun little feature.

Mike,

I've wondered if the outside of those mounds was maintained as short or longer grass initially. Today, the left one has a little short grass but the right one is rough from the top of it over.

Separately, a friend of mine noticed a post of yours from years ago mentioning having a collection of photos of the course that would be helpful in their current planning. Any recollection of that?

Thanks,

Sully

Sully, I do like the outside to be kept at fairway height to feed the ball further away.

I'll check my files at home tonight.  Only photo I found was an aerial of the quarry hole.  Neat, huh?

A smallish 1924 aerial.  I believe the quarry hole is just to the right of the buildings near the intersection of the two roads.

Ironic that the quarry hole is the only treed hole on the course.  Unfortunately I don't have any close-ups of architectural features.

Cheers.
