Steve Green and Joe Melchiors completed their match today.  We were originally planning to play Onwentsia but 3.5 inches of rain overnight left the club with five holes which were impassable due to the creek that meanders through the course overflowing its banks.

Emergency calls were placed and we were granted access to Exmoor.  We had a great time on a wonderful course.  The greens are pure and rolled very quickly today.  Thanks to Dave and Brian in the pro-shop for helping us out.

Green wins (5&3) and looks forward to the next match.

James, I need to pull out of this thing. It was a crazy spring, and it's going to be a crazier summer, and I'm just not going to have much time to meet up and play.

I'm sorry to bail, and I look forward to playing my first round match with Josh sometime around October or later. I still intend to beat his ass, but there's no reason to keep Ryan waiting any longer while I wait to figure out my schedule.

Ken Fry and I battled it out on a glorious day at the Warren course in South Bend. The course was certainly not new to Ken, nor to me, but both of us were impressed by some of the changes coming in advance of the 2019 US Senior Open. We were joined by local officiant JJ Shanley who outplayed both of us with three birdies of varying outrageousness.

The "real" match came down to 18, which is normally a stout par 4. However it is currently being renovated to become an even stouter par 4. This change was the most interesting to me and I am excited to see the end result.

18 played as a 120 yard par three instead and Ken pulled out the hard fought win one up. I look forward to getting back to South Bend to see the place again and see ND get their asses kicked on a football field again. Thanks Ken!

Ryan Taylor and I battled at Inverness on a breezy, yet warm and humid day.  The match stayed close up until the 14, when I started to pull away, after receiving some help in the handicap department.  The match ended, in my favor, at 4&2.

Thanks Neil for a great day!  It's always a treat taking another lap around Warren.  The course is in great shape and should be a great showcase for the 2019 US Sr. Open!

If guys come to town to play Warren, leave some extra time to stop in and play South Bend CC.  That would be a hard to beat one-two punch day contrasting modern and classic gems.  Contact me if interested!

Max Sternberg and Drew Groeger finally completed their match on Saturday afternoon. Despite missing out on a planned excursion to the Elks, we had an enjoyable round at Coyote Run made all the more interesting by the scramble outing ahead, which had certainly prepared to drink but was unprepared to walk as required thanks to the heavens opening up Friday night.

Coyote Run was a surprisingly enjoyable layout, plenty of options off the tee, wonderful vistas throughout the property, and very walkable (except for the par-3 16th, which I am convinced adds 20 min to pace of play).

Sternberg outlasted Groeger 3&2 and looks forward to the next round.

I just wrote up my take and noticed Max had already posted! I'll post anyway, with some background and pics:

Max and I were finally able to get our schedules in sync and get our match in. For the purists in the crowd, we walked and carried! After hanging tough the first 6 holes, his consistency got the better of me and I lost 3 and 2. He's a steady player, compresses the ball well and doesn't make many mistakes, the opposite of my game! The better player won.

In the spirit of the knockout, a few words and pics about the course: we had originally decided to play Kankakee Elks, a Langford/Moreau design about an hour south of Chicago. However, after our schedules finally revealed Saturday as a go, it turns out there was an outing so Kankakee Elks was out. We decided on Coyote Run in south suburban Flossmoor, a course neither of us had played. Coyote Run's "fame" may only be it's location: its in the same neighborhood as Ravisloe, Flossmoor CC, Idlewild CC and Olympia Fields CC. Good company.

Coyote Run was originally called Cherry Hills CC and designed by Jack Daray and Harry Collis back in 1932. Daray, perhaps best known for the Coronado GC in San Diego, was also thought to be a founding member of the ASGCA. He was the golf pro at Olympia Fields in the mid-20's and perhaps had a hand in the re-design of some holes there. Collis was the superintendent at Beverly CC in the mid-20's and worked on Flossmoor CC prior. Both seem to be fairly intertwined in the Chicago area golf "scene" back in the golden age.

With all that said, this is now a Greg Martin course! Cherry Hills had been abandoned or slated for housing by the late 1990's and the local park district acquired the property in 2003. Coyote Run opened in 2005 as a completely new course with not a single feature of the original Daray/Collis course being retained. Oh well. Nonetheless, Max and I both thought the course was enjoyable with some nice openness throughout. We noted at one point you could see the clubhouse from nearly every hole. Shot variety was decent with greens that canted a bit with a few undulations here and there to keep you on your toes.

All-in-all, an enjoyable afternoon in hot and humid conditions. It was a pleasure meeting Max and chatting with another GCA'er about local courses and such. Good luck the rest of the way!

James Reese and I battled today at Lake Shore Country Club.  We had a great day.  I feel fortunate to have snuck by with a 2&1 victory.

Our host, David Brown was very generous and made sure we enjoyed ourselves and our foursome was filled out by fellow GCAer John McCarthy.

Amazingly despite all the recent rain Lake Shore was playing very firm and fast.  The course was in great shape and we played some of the fastest greens I have seen in awhile.

They have let some of the course which is not in play grow and the look is very pleasing.  The property has some similarities to Shore Acres but the course tends to play over and minimize the ravines vs. incorporating them more into the course.

James, thanks again for putting this all together.

As the third wheel out at Lake Shore, let me again thank our host Dave Brown, Jim Reese who both put this tournament together AND won the auction to let us play Lake Shore and Steve Green.  GCAer Neil Johnson put the arm on our host to make the donation so kudos his way.

The only thing Lake Shore lacks is the length to challenge a top modern player.  I have seen how wiped out the North shore has been by rain for a month and a half...but from forty yards and in the ball bounced wonderfully.  There was not a wet ball all day and holding the green without a wedge in hand was ify.  And we played in 3:45.

Quite a day, and I thank you gentlemen for it.

As mentioned above, our match took place at Lake Shore CC in Glencoe.  I think Steve may have missed one fairway and played some good golf winning the match 2&1.

The course has an interesting history, with credit being given to Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. as the architect.  Other sources list Tom Bendelow as the original architect.  Donald Ross was brought in a few years later to look at the property and came up with a renovation plan which was never used.  Somehow the drawings were found some 80+ years later and the club hired on Ron Prichard to renovate based on Ross's plans.

Our host mentioned that Prichard may be doing some bunker work and expansion of natural areas in the near future.  I have not played a course in the Chicago area (not a huge sample size) as firm and fast as LSCC played yesterday and was told that we should how f&f it gets when it dries out.

Good luck to Steve in the next round.

On a warm and muggy July day, a gentlemen's match between Mr. Royer and Mr. Hetzel took place. Much like Byron Nelson winning the 1945 PGA Championship here, in similar fashion Mr. Royer (soundly) defeated Mr. Hetzel with a score of 2 and 1. Moraine CC is truly a must play golf course in Ohio. Be sure and stay IN the fairway here folks, trust me on this.

Here are a few pics from our walk today. Thanks again Dave for your hospitality, I had fun!

Ken Fry and I completed our match today at the very cool Langford gem at Culver Academy.  I was fortunate to come away with a 2&1 victory but even more fortunate to spend the afternoon with Ken and Chris Sturges.  The golf was fun and the course was a blast.

The Culver alumni spent their money well as the course is in good shape and as my Langford enthusiast playing partner put it restored to its original intent and glory.

A dramatic piece of land populated with nine really interesting greens surrounded by immense bunkers.  Ken set this up and the superintendent must have wanted to see us struggle as the pins were in diabolical positions on every hole.

Ken and Chris, thanks for a very enjoyable afternoon.  It was not an easy place to get to but was definitely worth the effort.

Just like a Syracuse grad.  Denied a final four appearance.

What a great day with Steve Green and Chris Sturges, both of whom trekked a heck of a long way to play one round of golf!

Culver was as much fun to play as I had hoped it would be.  I've toured the course a few times both pre and post renovation but had never played it until yesterday.  One of my fears was the course would play too short with modern equipment.  That was certainly not the case!  We had a stiff 20-25 mph wind for most of the day.  Like Lawsonia, Culver provides great movement and challenge that is flat out fun to play.  Superintendent Mike Vessely has the course dialed in wonderfully.

Chris had his trusty hickories out for his round which gave us all an opportunity to see how the course would have played near it's opening day.  What I didn't recall were how fierce the greens were!  Not only are the areas around the greens dramatic as one would expect to see on a Langford course, most of the greens had some wicked undulation built in.  How much of that was based on the original course and how much Bobby Weed infused into the greens I'm not sure.  I do know that I could take a steady diet of Culver and not get tired of it.  FUN!

Hard to root hard over a forfeit, but I am rooting for you, Matt.  I lost in the first round of the Renaissance Cup last week to the eventual champions, so maybe you will make it twice in one year!
