Last call for anyone interested in participating.  I am going to attempt to make the pairings Thursday evening, so the cutoff for entry will be noon on 3/2.  After accounting for location the pairings will be completely random.

We still need to determine what we will be playing for....ideas so far are chalice, shirt, WWE style belt, plaque or trophy.  If everyone chips in 10-20 bucks we could get a decent trophy and donate the rest to GCA.com.

Again any ideas/suggestions/complaints welcome.

For years, when I'd visit new courses with my associates, wed agree to split the cost of a golf shirt for the winner.  It helps support the pro, and is a constant reminder to the loser for years to come.

I love Tom's idea, and I'd also happily chip in for a trophy, James.

Thanks for organizing this!

I'll make a call down to Hamilton Tailoring here in Cincinnati and see what it would take to get a custom, GCA-red blazer made. Kidding. I think.

Here are the first round matches.  I tried as much as possible to minimize drive time before randomly drawing matches and apologize to anyone who has to drive more than others...it definitely was not intentional.  I do not want to set a firm deadline for matches (unless you all want to) but if we want to complete the knockout by the end of the year we should aim to get the first round matches in by the end of May then give subsequent matches a month to play.

It may be a good idea to post when participants have agreed on a date/course possibly allowing another match to be played concurrently.  Also, the goal is to try an play a course neither has seen but might not always be possible....at least try to play a course one has not played in many years or only played a time or two.  After the match provide a brief description of the outcome and any interesting notes concerning GCA.

I will worry about collecting $10-$15 entry fee in the near future.....we will play for trophy and a nice bottle of wine/spirit of winner's choice.  The remaining will go to GCA.com

I'm interested, but am concerned that travel for work may impact my ability to play certain rounds. I'm intrigued by the concept, however. This really depends how the dates play out.

Yeah I forgot to mention, matches will be played using most recent handicaps.

Mr. Hetzel will play Mr. Royer at Moraine.  Looking at early May or late April.  Thanks for the hard work making this possible.

Mr. McCarthy and I are going to try and snag an early morning time at Ravisloe on 5/13.  If anyone wants to play their match alongside, let me know and I will reserve accordingly.

Howard and I proved ourselves dedicated (stupid?) golfers by teeing it up this morning in frigid and windy conditions at the Glen Club in suburban Chicago. The quality of golf was certainly lacking a lot of time, but there were glimpses of brilliance and good company.

Howard was ahead most of the day but we ended up finishing 18 all Square. Really it seemed we were both trying to lose it most of the time. We decided to play off from 140 yards out in 18 fairway, and I somehow pulled out the extra hole victory.

I am looking forward to the next round! Thanks again for putting this together

The Jason Way, PJ Stockert match ended in a gentleman's draw yesterday afternoon at a location that I will leave unnamed.  For the sake of a conclusion for the bracket, Jason conceded due to some time constraints in scheduling future matches so I'm lucky enough to continue.  And while it was very chilly out by the end of the match (where is spring already btw??) I know I couldn't have had a better afternoon.  Incredible company and setting, if mediocre golf, and I'm forever in the debt of the people who came up with this bracket.

Also, I'm not sure how he fits it in, but Jason seems to be doing some really neat stuff at Canal Shores.  I'm hoping to get up there for a volunteer day to help out sometime, and if anyone wants to carpool lemme know.

This morning Reese defeated McCarthy with a bogey on 18, 1 and 0.  The match was contested at the renowned Ravisloe CC in Homewood, IL.  The company was great, the course looked fantastic but the play was marginal.  Jim has three daughters under six.  Pray for him.

This is tremendous fun.  If anyone needs a marker, drop a line.

As John stated our match was contested at Ravisloe.  The community is very lucky to have a public facility of that caliber....the Esler restoration in the early 2000's left behind some great bunkers and greens.  John just as easily could have won the match, as we both tried our hardest not to win.

As of now 4 matches have been completed:

Johnston def. Riefs 1up @ Glen Club
Sternberg def. Salmen 1up @ Ravisloe
Stockert def. Way 1up @ unnamed mystery location
Reese def. McCarthy 1up @ Ravisloe
Pratt def. Garvelink due to injury

Understandably few matches have been played as the weather has been pretty awful up until about a week ago.  Any other matches taking place in the near future?
