As per Niall Carlton's request, a few photos. The lighting is rather harsh, but that is Scotland in May for you  ::) ...

5,504 yards - par 68.

Starter's shed:

15 - Short three to shallow green, with Whinhill Reservoir behind:

16 - Shortish four, angled drive trying to hold as high up slope for advantageous angle to green angled beyond a rocky escarpment:

17 - Shortish four, over the top drive leaves this approach to a strongly pitched green. The Firth of Clyde and Dumbartonshire hills in the background:

18 - A tumbling four, looking from behind the green:

14 - Giving an appreciation of the Moorland terrain/setting:

Thanks for posting Clyde. Some cool looking features. The par-3 with the reservoir behind reminds me a little of the delightful 4th at County Sligo.
I wonder if building the reservoir took away some of the course?

any chance of a photo tour of Forfar ?  ;D

Clyde

Many thanks for posting. Good to see again and definitely need to get back for another game. If you have any more photos of the other holes I wouldn't mind seeing those.

From memory it's a longer shot than the 4th at Rosses Point. The green is also flatter and smaller with less depth than Rosses Point. Mr Colt made it easier to get on the green but then made it harder to putt with the right to left sweep of the green whereas at Whinhill if you did manage to hit that green you'd have an easier putt.

As for the reservoir, I think that predates the course with the first 9 holes laid out in 1906 from memory.

That short par 3 with the reservoir behind used to be the 1st hole, tee-ing off right in front of the clubhouse. Is there still a building there? After that hole you took a loop of 2 or 3 holes to the left (east) finishing behind the clubhouse again before crossing the road and playing the remaining holes to the West of the reservoir.

Almost didn't recognise the place with the Sun out !
