2017 Midwest Mashie: Event Location Open Thread
« on: January 09, 2017, 04:37:13 PM »
With apologies to the Godfather, I'm starting this thread...

Last Fall, I took this beautiful thing back to Cincinnati. My wife and I have disagreed upon its prominence in our house, but I have cherished having it in my possession.

At some point, I have to give it up though, right? Problem is, I'm not sure where I'm supposed to take this thing this year.

I believe a list of previous sites is helpful for reference...

7th - 2016 - Wolf Run GC (Indiana)
6th - 2015 - Windsong Farm / Town & Country Club (Minnesota)

It seems like there should be a Chicago-based Mashie, no?  Of course, there are numerous great options.  I hope to be able to return after a two year hiatus.

A little birdie mentioned the possibility of a Mashie in Iowa, at clubs located around Cedar Rapids & Davenport area which could be pretty special.

What about a 9-hole Mashie for those who are too busy to play a full 18-hole match? If you're in the middle of closing a big business deal, who has time for more than 9 holes, right?

I know a guy who could probably arrange for you to play The Loop in both directions on the same day, if you timed it right ...

But by the same token I'd encourage you to go to Stoatin Brae, which is easier for everyone to get to, affordable, and they have lodging right on site.  It would be a lot of fun.  And maybe we could put Ben in charge of getting a group on Battle Creek, either before or after the main event.

That mashie has seen some miles...especially for a club which I believe hit less than 25 shots while in my possession!  Bought in a garage sale in Ann Arbor circa 1984.  Taken around the world circa 1887-1990...lost a few times in the process and mailed to various places.  Eventually settled back to Ann Arbor circa 1993.  Taken to live in England circa 1998. Taken to North Carolina circa 2010...then forwarded to a founder of the Midwest Mashie. Seeing the photo was like seeing an old friend...cheers.

Ha Thanks for the nudge Pat.
We would love to host a Mashie at the Cedar Rapids Country Club in Iowa should the group be inclined to visit a new state.
We have Sept 29-Oct 01 carved out in our calendar just in case.

Thanks.  Harvester is about 90 Min WSW of Cedar Rapids.
Davenport is about 90 Mi ESE and would also be a natural Tie-in for a Friday for those coming from the Chicago or points East.

Voughn,

I think that is a great offer.  Part of what makes the Mashie great is playing courses that typically most don't know about.  Iowa deserves the Mashie.

I can't make it this year, that is my busy time of year and I also have another obligation

First, thanks to Vaughn and others who have already spent efforts in setting up this year's event, wherever it may be.

I've been hoping the Mashie would find its way to Iowa at some point, and the recent work at Davenport and Cedar Rapids makes a strong bid for The Hawkeye State. I can't speak for the group and I know I don't get a vote, but I'm in for Cedar Rapids, especially if I could fit Davenport in beforehand.

Chris, I know you love to drive and have all the time in the world, but fitting in Des Moines (Harvester) with Davenport/Cedar Rapids would be pretty tough. I've looked into a crash Iowa itinerary and it's not pretty. Although, it would go with the flow on what we've done the last couple years.

Ideal (condensed) Itinerary:
  • Thursday - 36 in Des Moines, with 18 at Harvester. Other 18 TBD.
  • Friday - AM: Drive 2.5 hours to Davenport. DCC PM. Drive 1.5-ish hrs to Cedar Rapids at some point, Friday Night or Saturday Morning.
  • Saturday/Sunday - Mashie at Cedar Rapids
  • TBD - Travel home

I'm not quite ready for #MedoraNDin2023.

Thank you Chris and we would love to take on the heavy lifting. We have a tentative confirmation that our restoration architects Ron Prichard and Tyler Rae would join us for a Saturday Night dinner presentation. If we go forward will work on getting a Friday confirm with the pro JP at Davenport and Harvester. Thanks again and we would be excited to host.
i would also agree that a Davenport tFriday would be ideal especially for those coming from the East.

I had no idea The Mashie had seen so much.  I'm glad it found its new home as the trophy for our little annual gathering.  Your contribution is much appreciated!

Hopefully you can make it one of these years.

Plenty of great options. I was blown away by Cedar Rapids CC when I visited last summer (as I attest in my stand alone thread) and I think it would be a terrific host for the Mashie. Thank you to Vaughn and everyone at Cedar Rapids for offering to host everyone.

The Mashie spent a year in my office in Cincinnati starting in early October 2014 - I'm not sure who had her before I did.

I strapped her into the passenger seat for a ride to the Twin Cities Mashie in September 2015, but she left me for a silver fox and I went home alone.

I feel like I say this every year, but one of the great charms of the Midwest Mashie's evolution is the way that it has come to highlight excellent courses that aren't already on everyone's radar. Mashies I've attended like the Twin Cities, Canterbury, Kingsley, and Broadmoor events have been consistently marked by incredible generosity from members and clubs to host us at courses that people cared about sharing with our group when they could have saved a ton of hassle by just letting us go fend for ourselves at any old course with openings available on GolfNow.

Vaughn and Cedar Rapids have put together a pretty killer tentative plan. Cedar Rapids is a classic Ross that recently completed a lauded renovation, in a wildly underrated Midwestern state that has never hosted the event previously. If we have local members at a private club working to host us and already penciling us in for a tentative date on a recently renovated Golden Age course that gets rave reviews, that gets my vote over any resort options. Not because the resort options aren't awesome, but just because any of us can go play them at any time and there's no sacrifice being made on the part of a membership to give up a few valuable weekend tee times to share a place they love with a rag-tag group of visitors who always go home from this event having been treated with far more hospitality than we deserve.

If I'm not there this year, it will only be because of obligations involved in getting a house built and moved into, which should happen right around the time of the Mashie. Pencil me in otherwise.
