Ohoopee Match Club- Best new for 2018?
« on: January 06, 2017, 04:27:53 PM »
I saw a photo on Instagram of Gil Hanse's work on the Ohoopee Match Club in Cobtown, GA.

What do you thinK?  It could be good or great or just ok. "“It’s a gorgeous site, wonderful topography, all sand with live oaks,” says Hanse"

I wonder if it will open this year or next.

Is this one of the areas that we have talked about as sand based?

Sand based course with a cool name and a popular architect. Good start!

Based on the comment of "go to the middle of nowhere Georgia, and then go another 10 miles", I am guessing it will be a "National Club".

It is a very good site.  I first saw that site about 8 years ago and since have seen sites up and down that area of Ga.  A few years ago Davis Love was to build a golf course and a grand prix racetrack there.  The ocean used to come to that area of Ga and there is Kershaw sand up and down that part of the country for about 30 miles.  I don't know all of the detials of his project but I would anticipate several more are built in that area.  It has  great access to many population centers, a good airport that can hold a G5 and Savannah airport ir 50 miles away.    The downside of the area is bugs in summer and the sand belt thru there is home to the gopher tortoise which creates homes for Eastern Diamondbacks but the upside is much greater as long as you don't care to play in summer.  I expect that area to do well and wish them the best with the project.  I think it is the first of several...

Mike,

I always remember your education of me about Southern grasses in comparison to Northeast. What kind of grass can they grow on the sandy soil in Georgia? Can it play firm most of the year?

Much in the way of elevation change macro or micro in that region?  Thanks.

Mike C,

I'm not comfortable talking about another guy's project when they could discuss if they wished.  Nothing personal.  There is good land thru there....I'm sure they will come on here and discuss when it is time....hope you understand...

Understood completely Mike.  Dumb Friday nite long week question on my part, sorry.

I guess I was thinking about your mention of the region generally as opposed to the particular project mentioned by Scott but I'm sensitive to your point.

Mike,
The region is a strip of very very good sand land where the ocean used to come to before 1960.  Farmers don't really like to grow crops on it but much is used for hunting and various other things....I may be prejudice but have had high hopes for the area for a long time.  Lots of golfers who could get there in less than two hours by car.
If you are really interested in some boring but good stuff then google " soil survey of Candler, Evans and Tattnall counties.

Suburban Vidalia! This place may be the middle of nowhere. At a minimum you can see it from there!

The ocean came there before 1960? typo?
I'm confused-I thought the seas were rising?
How's that global warming going down there today..

No...not a typo...the ocean did come there at some time before 1960....we got some global warming snow down here today and the seas were rising somewhere but not down here....
