Too many modern courses in the second half, which is consistent with the GOLF DIGEST definition, unfortunately.  I've played 40 of the second 100, and seen half of the remainder.  And I'd rather go back and play any of the courses I saw for The Confidential Guide in Iowa or New Hampshire or upstate NY, than most of the ones I've missed.

Somewhere in the 80's on the Golf Magazine World list, since the bottom keeps changing.  I am on a quest to play as many great, great courses as possible, and some probably do not make these lists.  As far as I am concerned, Rye, Baltay, Dye Fore, and Dismal Red should be in the World 100.

To answer your question, I think it would depend on the person.
I know for me, I didn't really appreciate what made a great golf course until I had played most of the Top 50 and especially the Top 10.  Very different feel when you step on the first tee of a Top 10 course!
So it took me some time to really know the difference.  Some of the courses that I played early in my journey did not see so good after I had played some of the Top 10 and could really compare the two.  That is why it is so fun for me to see new courses or renovated ones now, so that I can properly judge their merits.

I would say you'd get the idea of what competes after seeing 15 or 20 of the top 100, including a couple of the top 10.


At the same time, a person is only qualified to nominate as many courses for the top 100 as the number of courses in the current top 100 that he has seen. 


For example, if I've seen Oak Hill and I don't think it's so great, I'm entitled to vote for a different course in the top 100.  But I can't assume that other top-100 courses are no better than Oak Hill, and therefore determine that Courses A, B, C and D are all top-100 worthy just because I think they are all better than Oak Hill.  This is a significant problem with the voting in some polls ... most people tend to assume that more of the courses they've seen should be in the top 100, than they have a right to assume.

You suggest quite a small number (essentially half of what David'd experience reveals) and you did hit on why I asked the question.  I see these Doak numbers tossed around and obviously know that it doesn't add up...far too many high numbers.  I suspect folks are regionally biased simply because they are regionally heavy in what they have played. 

I also asked because I know that it took me roughly 60 of GB&I top 100 candidates (maybe 150ish courses?) to get a handle on a fairly firm list frommy PoV anyway.   With so many more courses in the US I thought maybe guys would need to 100ish (assuming there are really 250ish good candidates for top 100).

This brings me to my thing.  I haven't played many top 100 courses in the US, I haven't counted, but less than 10 I would think. However, I was incredibly surprised that Palmetto doesn't make the list, but Yeamans Hall does.  I have Palmetto as clearly the superior course, but then I favour variety and usually variety is a direct result of favourable terrain...which I think Palmetto has in spades over YHC....and I can't say YHC has better greens than Palmetto...which is why its a no-brainer for me in favour of Palmetto. Its interesting the thought process which occurs in figuring this stuff out because I use head to head quite a bit.

Interestingly it seems I've played 48 on the GB&I list-from the most recent Top100golfcourses uk website-
surprising because on my last  4 GB&I trips(30+ rounds)  I've played exactly 3 courses(all repeats) that were rated in the top GB & I Top 100 so go figure.

Jeff - Like you I've played many more of the Top 100 in GB&I than USA:  USA = 21  GB&I = 60

I haven't looked at the second 100 but why do I strongly suspect that once you get past the top 20 or so I'd rather play the latter?

Good Point.  Courses in the 2nd hundred I would rather play than at least 60 courses in the top 100:  Rock Creek Cattle, Philly Cricket, Dismal Red, Wannamoissett, Eastward Ho, Yale, White Bear Yacht Club, Meadow Club.

Did better with the second hundred list (6) than the first (only 1, which I hated.)

Surprised to the The Prince still on here at 109 (up from 114!) given that no one has played it in two years and it will likely never exist as it was in 2014.

Not many at all. I've played the Ocean Course at Kiawah and Kinloch in Virginia. Also attended US Opens at Shinnecock (2004) and Oakmont (2008). I'm looking forward to a trip to Bandon in the near future with great anticipation.
