One of the stipulations of the comp was that after playing the match the competitors give a review of the course. I played Michael Graham in the first round at Goswick last week and was fortunate to go through with neither of us playing all that well. A typical early season scrappy affair as the pundits might have said.


Given Sean is doing one of his incomparable photo tours on Goswick, and Ran had earlier reviewed it, there is no point me trying to compete with that. All I'll say is that Goswick was a pleasure to play and I'm sure would be even more of a handful in the summer months playing the "summer" course.

My two visits have produced failure to play due to mist/fog and a tough day in 30 mph winds.

It must be a new record to be knocked out of a competition before you’ve paid your share of the soon to be purchased trophy.

Venue: Berwick-Upon-Tweed (Goswick) GC
Date: January 21st
Conditions: Cold, frosty but beautifully clear day
Referee: T Gallant
Pairing: M. Graham vs C. Carlton
Carlton wins 4&3.
Niall deservedly moves into the 2nd round of this year's competition. My golf was a blur of pushed drives, thinned irons, the odd shank (two!) and skulled wedges. Despite the frosty start the course was excellent. I thoroughly look forward to getting back in the summer to play the 'full' course. I just hope Niall goes on to lift the trophy so I can at least claim to have been knocked out by the eventual winner.

difficult to say for me as I haven't had a handicap for over 30 years but I recon if I play off scratch that would be about right.
