RIP Architect Gene Hamm

Saw this in yesterday's (Raleigh) News & Observer, architect Gene Hamm died on the 10th at age 93.  He designed a former home course of mine (NLE since 2007), Wake Forest GC.  Did mostly courses in NC and SC, nothing too earth-stattering.  But some weren't bad (including WFGC).  Did several (now low end) courses in the Myrtle Beach area.

I didn't realize that he was a fine player (turned pro) and all-around athlete.

Living in the South, have played many Hamm courses in NC and SC.  Most of them fairly minimalist and playable, and affordable for most.  His courses were a lot of fun.

Just played one of his courses Saturday! Played 6 of his designs and all were good solid golf courses, could see the Ellis Maples flavor. A life well lived. RIP & best wishes for his family.

There are guys like Gene Hamm across the country.  So many miss some pretty good golf because they want to play the obvious.  I've played several of his courses and enjoyed them all.

Thanks for this post. I learned the game at one of Mr. Hamm's designs in Virginia. Cedars CC, a nine-holer in southern Virginia.

Played 19 of them. One of them, Yadkin Country Club (emphasis on the country) is across the street from my house. The nine he designed (eight of them left) is quite good.

I had played several of Mr. Hamm's courses over the years, and more as part of a senior group since I moved back to NC last year.  Like others, I found them all to be good golf, and some are better than that.  Fun for all, affordable in most cases; good stuff.  FWIW,  I especially like Henderson CC and Lochmere, but didn't know that he had designed either of them until I looked at the link Scott Burroughs provided.
